Julianne Hough graces the cover of ‘Shape’ magazine and opens up about her current diet and fitness plan. The former ‘DWTS’ star reveals how she is now embracing her curves and making her workouts enjoyable, after years of a more rigorous routine which did not bring happiness.
The 28-year-old actress and former ‘Dancing with the Stars’ pro dancer is modeling her own athletic-leisure clothing line, MPG Collection by Julianne Hough, on the magazine’s cover and inside photos (which you can see below). It’s just one of her many endeavors.
In her interview with the publication she opens up and reveals the journey she’s undergone to accept her body as it is. She says, “I love my shape because I feel strong and fit, and that makes me feel confident.”
But she didn’t always have that kind of confidence, she goes on to reveal. She says, “When I look at pictures of myself when I was 19, my body was bangin’, but I was killing myself. I was working out two and a half hours a day and eating the bare minimum to survive.”
Continuing, she said, “I was so miserable. I wasn’t healthy. To be honest, I looked like a kid. Now I’m embracing the fact that I’m a woman with curves.”
And that’s often the case when one takes exercise and weight watching to that extreme. It doesn’t lead to happiness, but instead a constant preoccupation or even worse. Fortunately, for Hough she was able to rouse herself from that mindset and, to give us all the cautionary tale.
She says of her approach now, “I love going to classes with my girlfriends. We’ll call each other or send a group text and organize. Sometimes we sign up for Spartan races and have a blast.”
Outlining her weekly routine, she said, “I exercise three to six times a week, but usually I do five days of hard-core training. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, I do Tracy Anderson or Body by Simone or I work out with my trainer, Astrid Swan. Tuesdays and Thursdays, I do Core Power Yoga, which I love. If I’m doing something special, like shooting the SHAPE cover, or when I want to tone up quickly, I’ll also take a SoulCycle class.”
Continuing, she said, “Saturdays, I go on a really long hike with my friends or take another yoga class, depending on how I feel.”
She also said that for her Sunday is a “reboot day” and she takes a walk with her fiance Canadian hockey player Brooks Laich.
As for her current diet she said, “I try to stick with foods that don’t come in boxes. I don’t want a whole paragraph of ingredients in my body.” She went on to say that she and her fiance “generally eat protein and veggies.”
Elaborating, she said, “For a boost of energy, I mix in quinoa or rice sometimes. If Brooks had his way, we’d have steamed chicken and broccoli every day. That’s too boring for me, and when I get bored I tend to binge eat.”
She revealed that her cheat food is pizza. She said, “I want everyone to know that I’m not Miss Perfect. You can cheat every once in a while, and that’s OK. You can still have a fit body as long as you work out regularly and eat relatively healthfully throughout your life.”
Sound advice indeed. After all, when diet spells deprivation, failure is also looming in the picture, and that starts the whole cycle of yo-yoing which is in contrast extremely unhealthy.
