Dinosaur Jr. ‘Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not’ Album Review Roundup

August 5, 2016

Dinosaur Jr.’s new album is ‘Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not.’ It’s the fourth reunion album from the veteran alternative rock trio and the critics have been nearly universal in praise. Here’s a roundup of reviews.

Dinosaur Jr.

Yes, critics are raving as Dinosaur Jr’s original lineup — guitarist J Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph
– have released yet another reunion album. In total the band has 11 albums to their credit thus far dating all the way back to the mid-1980s. The band got their start in 1984 and they have weathered the breakups and reformations and even a name change (adding “Jr” after a legal dispute). Most recently they reunited in 2005 and this marks their 11th solid year as a band. Perhaps by now we can stop considering it a reunion; the band is back in full force, alive and well and showing no signs of slowing up in this, the second decade of the 21st century.

Dinosaur Jr. drew rave reviews with 2007’s ‘Beyond’ and once again, with very few exceptions, critics are heralding the band for their continued originality and creativity. This new album ”Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not’ arrives in the doldrums of summer even as Drake has ruled the charts for weeks with ‘Views’ and the music world is waiting for Frank Ocean’s long awaited ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ which was to have been released the same day (August 5th).

But while there may be a flurry over other albums, critics are united in their praise of ‘Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not’ Here’s a roundup of what they’re saying.

“…. On their latest, the steady and excellent Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not, it’s clear that their well for inspiration has not yet run dry…..” –Pitchfork

“….Not given over entirely to the atmospherics of Beyond, the heavy jamminess of Farm, or the poppiness of I Bet on Sky, Give a Glimpse instead combines all those stylistic elements into a package that may not feature as many lastingly memorable songs, but is replete with all the welcome signatures of the band’s sound. ….” –Slant Magazine

“…. Overall, while they’re not reinventing the wheel here, this is a very enjoyable album and their best work since 2007’s Beyond…..” –Under the Radar

“….Dinosaur Jr. have succeeded in creating the ultimate gateway album, a perfect synthesis of all the ingredients that have made them one of the most intriguing and long-lasting guitar bands in recent history. ….” –The Quietus

“… Rich organ chords add colour to the gentle choruses of ‘Be A Part’ but a crackling power trio sound dominates, with Barlow’s melodic, thick basslines holding their own against Mascis’s blistering guitar….” — NME

“….There’s little here that will convert Dinosaur Jr sceptics. But for those who enjoy their nostalgic licks, ‘Give A Glimpse of What Yer Not’ is a pretty satisfying addition to their back-catalogue. ….” –DIY Magazine

“….It shocks by sounding as vital as Dinosaur Jr. ever has. Deciding to not to build upon the expansive textures of I Bet on Sky, the trio nevertheless sounds vividly oversaturated throughout Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not. …..” — AllMusic

“….Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not isn’t perfect, but it’s yet another solid record from a band that has rarely sounded better. ….” — Consequence of Sound

“….To be frank, it’s pretty much business as usual for Dinosaur Jr on Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not, but when the formula works this well, what’s the point in switching it up? Love live the fuzz. …..” –Drowned in Sound

Yes, there’s excitement in the air, no doubt. Time will tell as fans have a chance to have their say. Check out the Dinosaur Jr. ‘Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not’ album cover art and music videos below!
