The 24-year-old Zayn Malik is one of four cover stars for the September ELLE UK “Icons of Change” edition. He shares the honor with Kristen Stewart, Amandla Stenberg and Hari Nef who all have their individual covers.
He’s graced magazine covers all over the world and this is his latest coup. And, as you can see from the photos and the video below, fans were not left disappointed, to say the least!
This time around, in the interview, he made rare comments about his relationship with Gigi Hadid. He told ELLE UK, “She’s super intelligent, I think that’s why it works so well. And we do the same type of job so we get that with each other.”
He also opened up on that perennial topic which he has discussed at length, leaving One Direction. It’s been nearly a year and a half since he split from the group in the height of their fame, months before their hiatus. It’s a hiatus that’s looking more and more looks permanent as two others, Harry Styles and Liam Payne, have signed solo record deals.
Zayn Malik said of his decision to leave One Direction, “At that time in my life I felt I had done everything I could do there and I just needed to change it up. It didn’t feel brave. I just don’t have it in me to feel fully secure in anything I do.”
And, of course, he has now gone on to a brilliant start at a solo artist. His debut single, ‘Pillowtalk’ — and his steamy music video in which he shares the screen with none other than Gigi Hadid — topped charts all over the world as did the album ‘Mind of Mine.’
Reflecting on this rapid rise to solo fame, he said, “My entire life has changed in the last year. I’m still taking it all in. I’ve found so much out about myself. Mostly how in love with music I still was.”
He said his debut album “is a build up of six years and never being able to express what I wanted to say. I had something to get off my chest.’
He went on to say, “I always strive towards something better. It’s why I think sometimes I come across the wrong way, a bit distant. I’m just stressed out trying to control how I’m perceived. I think about things a lot.”
He also weighed in on social media and revealed he’s not exactly a fan. He told the publication, “As much as social networking is a big thing now, there’s something to be said about having something real, if I had a choice I would take the camera off everyone’s iPhone and make sure we didn’t have Twitter or Facebook.”
He went on to say, “It affects art form. There’s something to be said about living in the moment. I try to keep my phone for calls.”
