‘The Equals’ star Kristen Stewart has landed the coveted September fashion issue of ELLE UK under the banner “Icons of Change.” And for the now 26-year-old actress who first found global fame as Bella Swan in ‘The Twilight Saga’ franchise, the public has witnessed her transformation and transition and now she’s making headlines as she speaks openly for the first time about her girlfriend Alicia Cargile.

She tells ELLE UK, “I think also right now I’m just really in love with my girlfriend. We’ve broken up a couple of times and gotten back together, and this time I was like, ‘Finally, I can feel again.”

She goes on to explain why she was now being open about the relationship contrasting it with hiding a relationship with an unnamed “guy.”

She says, I was like, ‘Actually, to hide this provides the implication that I’m not down with it or I’m ashamed of it, so I had to alter how I approached being in public. It opened my life up and I’m so much happier.”

It was nearly a year ago that Kristen Stewart first spoke obliquely of Alicia Cargile, and told Nylon magazine — in response to whether or not she wanted to make “pronouncements” as to her sexuality, she said, “Google me, I’m not hiding.” That’s been the fact for some time. There are countless, literally countless paparazzi photos of Kristen Stewart and Alicia Cargile out in public, often holding hands. You can see a couple such pics below.

She also said last year, “I think in three or four years, there are going to be a whole lot more people who don’t think it’s necessary to figure out if you’re gay or straight. It’s like, just do your thing.”

And already in just a year so much has changed in our cultural milieu. The LGBT community is less marginalized, less stigmatized. Now “coming out” for a public figure is not so traumatic and earth shattering. And at the same time, every time a public figure does take a stance — as Kristen Stewart now has — it contributes to the dissolution of the stigma.
