Zendaya opens up about her wide variety of hairstyles and how she deals with criticism of her looks and her fashions. The ‘K.C. Undercover’ also discusses politics and voting for the first time this year and the advice she has for others.
Zendaya has made headlines recently for her return to the Disney Channel. She’s among many who first found fame via the channel. But she’s back, in the new series ‘K.C. Undercover’ and as such is making the promo rounds.
But of course there’s much more to talk about than television when it comes to Zendaya and she opened up on those topics that people are most interested in hearing about. Yes, that’s fashion, beauty and especially hair. She may be just 19 years old, but she’s been a trendsetter and we have seen her in a wide variety of hairstyles — quite the gamut from long to short to straight to natural to dreads and more. And she’s embraced the styles with an absence of self-consciousness.
She told Yahoo! Beauty, “It’s fun to see yourself in different hair.” She went on to say, ““I like to display different types of beauty. There are so many women that can look at my hair and just connect to it and be empowered by it. It’s become a lot more than just a wig.”
As fans know, her wide variety of hairstyles have even sparked controversy. After all who can forget the infamous run-in with Fashion Police’s Giuliana Rancic who made disparaging comments about her dreadlocks at the Oscars red carpet. That sparked quite the uproar in social media and major media alike.
She also revealed that she’s moving past feeling concerned about the reactions she gets from the public. She said, “I don’t have any pressure now.”
She went on to say, “Everybody has opinions but opinions are like buttholes. Everybody has one and everybody thinks everyone else’s stinks,” she jokes. “Some people like when I do my crazy wigs and other people don’t. And that’s OK. The whole point of fashion is to be thought about and to be discussed. There is no right or wrong. It’s supposed to be a conversation.”
“I’m really lucky to be in a position where I feel enough confidence to do what I want. I strictly dress and wear my hair for myself. If I feel confident, I feel comfortable and that’s the only thing that matters to me. It’s very liberating to know that you are just doing something for yourself.”
As for transitioning into adulthood, she said, “And I don’t feel too much pressure to mature too quickly. My grown-woman sexy happens at a gradual pace. It’s step by step, whatever I’m comfortable with.”
She’s ruled out drastic changes with saying, “What’s the point in dyeing your hair? I can be blond if I want to. There are too many advancements in hair to actually permanently do anything. I even have wigs for shaving my head. I have wigs for everything!”
And is celebrating wigs, not hiding them. Perhaps there’s a Zendaya wig line in the future? She made no such mention but did say of her own personal collection, ““They are all in little ziplock baggies so I need to organize a little better. They are usually all messed up. So I pull one out and it’s like, ‘At one point it used to be this, but I don’t know what it is now.’”
Wigs perhaps not but as for the fashion line, she did say it is ““in the works” and “it’s gonna look awesome.”
She opened up about politics, but spoke in general terms, not taking sides or declaring any allegiances. She said, “It’s not an exciting time in our political life. It’s very interesting.”
She went on to encourage others to vote, saying, “I don’t like to tell people what to do or who to vote for or tell you why you should or why you shouldn’t. I really think that’s something that everybody has to take on their own responsibility and find for themselves. All I have to say to anybody out there voting or voting for the first time is please do your research. Please look and take the time to know who you are voting for and why you are voting for them.”
