Zoe Saldana paid tribute to ‘Star Trek Beyond’ costar Anton Yelchin who died at age 27 in a freak car accident. During her interview on ‘Late Show with Stephen Colbert,’ she reminisced about him and spoke of the “terrible loss.”
As the third movie of the JJ Abrams’ reboot of the ‘Star Trek’ franchise reaches theaters, the 38-year-old Zoe Saldana once again reprises her role as Lt. Uhuru, the iconic and trailblazing character that Nichelle Nichols brought to the small screen in the original 1960s series.
Anton Yelchin will be seen as Pavel Chekov for the final time in the series, as filming had long been completed before his untimely death last month. The actor shockingly was killed when his parked Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backwards in his driveway, pinning him against a security fence and a brick pillar.
In her interview with Stephen Colbert, Saladana reflected upon the her shared journey with her ‘Star Trek’ costars that began with the original JJ Abrams ‘Star Trek’ of 2009 which was followed by ‘Star Trek into Darkness’ in 2013.
She said, “He had just turned 18 when we met him. He was the youngest one of the crew, and I almost feel like he was the wisest one.”
Continuing, she said, “So it was a terrible loss. We’re mourning. He’s an irreplaceable person, and the kindest person. He loved what he did. I’m here today, and the rest of the cast and J.J. [Abrams] and Justin [Lin], we’re here promoting the movie mainly for him, because he would have wanted that.”
And it might be the very last time we see a Pavel Chekov character in this new franchise going forward. JJ Abrams’ told the Toronto Sun, ” ‘I would say there’s no replacing him.” He went on to say, “There’s no re-casting. I can’t possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better.”
He didn’t give any details as to the fate of the fictitious Chekov and whether or not he would be killed off, but added, “I have thought about it, we’re working on it, and it’s too early to talk about it.”
You can see Zoe Saldana’s full interview below, as she did discuss the new movie ‘Star Trek Beyond’ as well as her history of being cast in sci fi movies, including James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ which originally launched her to stardom.
But as has been the case for ‘Star Trek’ cast members — including Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto – Zoe Saldana took a moment to pay tribute to the late Anton Yelchin.
