Leslie Jones is stunning in a scarlet, figure-hugging gown on the red carpet at the L.A. premiere of ‘Ghostbusters.’ After calling out designers for not volunteering to dress her, Christian Siriano stepped up and designed a fabulous custom dress.
Yes, this did not come about in the normal fashion. The 48-year-old SNL alum Leslie Jones took to Twitter to blast designers for not volunteering to dress her for the upcoming premiere of the Paul Feig-directed reboot of ‘Ghostbusters.’
She Tweeted, “It’s so funny how there are no designers wanting to help me with a premiere dress for movie. Hmmm that will change and I remember everything.”
She quickly brought to the forefront the ongoing struggle that women who don’t fit the Hollywood and runway definition of beauty confront. For Jones it was the trifecta as she is African-American, over 40 and is not a size zero or even a 2 or a 4.
Not long after, while the Internet was having the usual uproar over whether or not she should have spoken out — and now that she has what does this all mean, and blah blah blah — Project Runway alum Christian Siriano Tweeted in response, with hand raising and waving emoji, and now the rest is history, even as the debate goes on.
Stylist Jessica Paster jumped into the fray, and putting the blame on Jones, telling Pret-a-Reporter, “She should have known four to five months ago the date of premiere, and said, ‘I’m not a sample size, I need to go to designers early or buy myself a dress.’”
Yes, the bane of the “sample size” that’s led some actresses, reportedly, to diet their way to fit such “sample size” norms. For her part, Jones had what we might call a forceful (and unprintable here) all caps response, which you can see here.
Weighing in on the controversy, Serani told The New York Times, ““There are probably tons of designers who would want to dress her but were not, like me, on her first list.” He also put into the focus the financial constraints that some companies and brands might face, in being able to “gift” a celebrity red carpet fashions. He said, “I would never be able to make something for free for every event. We don’t have that kind of budget.”
It’s a dialogue that’s much needed, and it’s unfolding even as the ‘Ghostbusters’ movies has its international rollout. The final result for Leslie Jones at least, is a gorgeous — and we do mean gorgeous rose red gown that goes to show that no one’s shape or side need be an impediment to styling. To paraphrase the famous Frank Sinatra quote, dressing well is the best revenge.
