Dita Von Teese is opening up about plastic surgery and denouncing critics who shame women for their choices. The burlesque star also reveals her fitness routine and what she does daily to remain such a beauty and glamour icon.
The 43-year-old entertainer and entrepreneur recently opened up on these hot-button topics that we can’t stop talking about. She told Yahoo! Beauty just what she thinks of this neverending uproar over surgical enhancements and the chatter that goes on as to whether a woman has or has not had any work done.
She said, “I think people often get vilified for utilizing the technology that we have now, but you have to understand that plastic surgeons were around in the 1700s.”
Amen to that! After more than 200 years we’d hope people would have settled down by now. Well, sadly not the case. Witness Meg Ryan, Reese Witherspoon just to name a couple of recent examples.
Continuing, Dita Von Teese said, “We sometimes forget it’s not something new. We want to make fun of each other for it. If people didn’t vilify each other, we could learn a lot more about each other’s beauty secrets.”
She elaborated adding, “There’s people that use those tools properly, and there’s people that turn them into an art piece which I can admire in a different way, but I just wish we didn’t have to vilify each other for those things. We’re women — share our beauty secrets freely.”
So true. The fact that they are “secrets” is the problem. An open discussion would help everyone. Thankfully, though, we do see the rise of Instagram and YouTube stars who build huge followings for sharing tutorials and tips.
OF course, this did beg the question. How does Dita Van Teese manage to look so amazing, even in those paparazzi photos? She said, “In my normal beauty routine, I don’t spend more than 10 or 15 minutes.” She went on to say, “Before I leave my house, I put my sunscreen on, powder, red lipstick, and sunglasses, and it takes minutes, but if I have a little bit more time, I’ll take it a little bit further.”
Dita Van Teese also discussed her fitness routine. After all, she’s as famous for her glamorous pinup girl looks, the raven hair and most especially the hourglass physique. Despite the 15-year disciple of Pilates along with her pursuit of ballet dancing, she says, “I get a little bored with my workout routine just like anyone so I’m always looking for new things.”
She went on to say, “I tried fencing, and of course I’ve learned all sorts of social dances.”
She also opened up about some of her current forays and said, “Recently, I had this idea that I was going to go to a CrossFit studio and work out with a private trainer, and I’ve been really enjoying that. It’s fun to be in a different atmosphere. I always crack up at the shirtless guys walking around eating power bars and things like that, I’m very amused by it.”
You can see the full interview here as she dishes on other topics including the kinds of clothes she likes to wear in daily life when not wowing and raising eyebrows on the stage.
Speaking of, she spoke The Daily Telegraph in Australia (via The Daily Mail) — where she’s currently touring with her new show, ‘Strip, Strip, Hooray!’
She’s brought the 1930s and 1940s burlesque to a new audience nearly a century later, and she says of her longstanding — and in fact, quite frankly trailblazing work — “I want my legacy to be about promoting glamour and helping people believe they can be whoever they want to be and live the life that they want to live.”
She added, ‘Of course, I want people to see what my life’s work has been but more importantly I want people to change their minds about what burlesque is and have them see all different kinds of performers owning the stage.”
Both on the stage and in her outspokenness, Dita Von Teese continues to be one of a kind!
