Justin Bieber delivered an emotionally powerful tribute to the victims of the mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub and to ‘The Voice’ singer Christina Grimmie during his live concert in Orlando. See the video and photos of the pop music superstar as he paid respect to the slain.
Justin Bieber performed at the at Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, just weeks after that weekend in the city that saw 49 people at the landmark LGBT Pulse night club lose their lives in Orlando in the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. That tragedy was proceeded by the shooting death of Christina Grimmie after her concert also in Orlando. Grimmie was a finalist on ‘The Voice’ and a rising star, whose life was cut short at 22.
Bieber dedicated his performance of ‘Purpose,’ the stunning piano ballad that is the title track of his comeback album. He began the performance, seated on the stage, as the lyrics took on a heartbreaking nuance — “Thinking my journey’s come to an end / Sending out a farewell to my friends, forever peace.”
The names of the victims scrolled on a backdrop on stage, much like the end credits of a movie and Bieber segued into singing the names. Video clips and pictures capture the reverent moment, and they’re going viral in social media.
Justin Bieber has made headlines for falling down on stage in concerts lately and for any hint of bad boy behavior. Tabloids, celebrity news outlets and even mainstream media have been quick to find and report any hint of regression into those troubled few years that, for a time, derailed his music career.
But this time around, he has joined the many music artists who have performed tributes of some kind in concert. Among them, Christina Aguilera who released a charity single, ‘Change,’ and gave a stunning debut performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. And dozens of Broadway stars — including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Whoopie Goldberg, Gloria Estefan, Carole King, Sarah Jessica Parker — joined forces to perform a charity single cover of the Burt Bacharach classic ‘What the World Needs Now Is Love.’
Sadly it’s a familiar template. An act of terrorism and/or mass violence shocks the world. An artist takes to the stage to lead us in remembrance.
