Adele made her long-awaited debut at Glastonbury Festival Pyramid Stage. The headlining performance was a triumph, and music critics and social media alike are raving. See photos, video highlights, set-list and find out what the critics are saying in their reviews as the music superstar took to the iconic stage.
It’s hard to believe this was a debut for Adele who has once again cemented her status as one of the greats of pop music, not just of our contemporary times, but of all time. Her ’25’ album has shattered all kinds of sales records and has become a cultural phenomenon eclipsing the astronomical sales of her ’21’ album.
And, yet as always, Adele is as proverbially down to earth as ever with her signature stage banter laced with all kinds of profanities. As Billboard reports, at one point, she gleefully acknowledged her reputation, saying, “The BBC had to do a warning about ma potty mouth. I bet Muse didn’t get that.”
And as always, all Adele had to do was take to The Pyramid Stage in one of her custom gowns and sing. No backup singers. No laser shows. Just her orchestral accompaniment and her inimitable voice. Social media was enamored with her singing, of course, but also bemused by the F-bombs. And as for that stunning 1970s Boho-style gown, it’s a bespoke design by Chloe. The Parisian house’s creative director herself, Clare Waight Keller, posted some pics on Instagram which you can see below.
As the critics are weighing in, they all have seemingly the same mission; finding just the right superlatives both to describe the performance and to react to the swearing. Here’s a roundup.
“….As it turns out, her performance works really well. There’s something endearing about the vast contrast between Adele the singer – slick and professional, and, almost uniquely among mega-selling divas, not given to rococo embellishments – and Adele the person who speaks into the microphone between songs, who swears so profusely that, she proudly announces, the BBC have had to put a warning out about her language before broadcasting the show live, and who inquires about the state of the front row’s bowels. …..” The Guardian
“….Even if you’ve never liked her songs, Adele undeniably won over everyone at Glastonbury, her charisma, charm and down-to-earth attitude so authentic, it’s impossible not to love her……” — The Independent
“….When she first speaks (“This is the best fackin’ moment of my whole life. Can you put the lights on? You, my darling in the blue puffer jacket, come up and say hello to me?!”) you’re reminded why Adele’s headline set is a no-brainer. Her vocals are extraordinary, undeniably so. But her voice is one of the people. “Anyone from Tottenham here?” she says before “Hometown Glory.”….” Billboard
