Steven Tyler was electrifying in a live concert on the ‘Today Show,’ his first on morning television celebrating his country music album. You can see all the video and lots of photos of the rousing performance and find out what he had to say about the much-anticipated new album.
Yes, Steven Tyler brought Music City to the Big Apple in a live concert. The Aerosmith frontman’s solo debut country is ‘We’re All Somebody From Somewhere’ and it will be released on the Nashville label, Big Machine Records on July 15th with some noted country artists as featured guests, including Rhett Akins, Hillary Lindsay, and Dan Huff.
He performed the album’s title track and a cover of Janice Joplin’s iconic ‘Piece of My Heart’ which is also one of the tracks. But the celebration on The Plaza at Rockefeller Center wouldn’t be complete without a Flashback Friday classic, and Tyler did deliver. He performed the 1993 Aerosmith hit ‘Cryin” for his enthusiastic audience.
You can see all the videos and the pictures below. Country music, yes, but Tyler retains his signature rock god persona, complete with his signature costumes. It was quite a visual and sonic feast for the early morning hours.
During his interview in Studio 1A with co-anchor Matt Lauer — video below — he spoke about how taking part in the CMT festival was the impetus for him to move to Nashville and pursue country music. He said, “I fell in love with the town and the rest is history.”
He echoed comments he made last month in his interview with Ellen DeGeneres. He said at the time “In the last couple years, I’ve realized that country’s like the new rock and roll.” Name checking country superstar Eric Church in particular he said, “He just rips it up like Zepplin. It’s crazy how far they go with it.”
He went on to say, “So, I thought, ‘I’ll go down to Nashville,’ so I went down and it was like following the star the Bethlehem.”
He told Matt Lauer that his interests in country music dates back to childhood and that growing up in New Hampshire he was tuning in and listening to a radio station in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He spoke of Johnny Horton’s “All For The Love Of A Girl” in particular saying, “It was the first time I got those feelings inside for music in a sexual way, in a life-giving way. And then I heard the Everly Brothers and their harmonies.”
Lauer also asked him about his ‘Out on a Limb Tour’ which kicks off in July and how he felt about touring without Aerosmith. He said of it, “I’m a chance taker.”
