Vicki Gunvalson is revealing the secret of her sudden 22-pound weight loss. The RHOC star opens up about the drastic low-calorie diet she followed and why. She also opens up about moving on after her split with Brooks Ayers.
Vicki Gunvalson has been photographed looking noticeably thinner as she returns for the 11th season of Bravo’s Real Housewives of Orange County. And, rather than let speculation run rampant, the 54-year-old reality TV star and insurance entrepreneur told Entertainment Tonight what she had done.
In the exclusive, sit-down interview at her residence in her Coto de Caza, California, she said, “I lost 22 pounds. When life gives you changes, change everything.”
She was referencing her split from businessman Brooks Ayers after their five-year relationship. She’s now dating, politician and former police officer Steve Lodge, who she says will only make a couple of appearances on the show.
Continuing, she said she had dieted over “a three-month period” and she had “cut out all alcohol” and she was consuming only “500 calories a day.”
She then went into detail on the diet, saying, “No carbs, so I just did lettuce and grapefruit in the morning… celery, carrots, whatever it could be. Just very raw, and then nothing really for lunch. I would just do water, lemon water. Hot lemon water. And then at night, I would just have salad and protein, and it worked!”
She opened up about her heartbreak, which was the impetus for such a risky crash diet. She said, “You know what, I was at such a depressed state.”
Continuing, she added, “I’m 54 now, and your metabolism changes. I put on, like, 10 pounds from my 40s to my 50s, and I never felt strong. I don’t want to be a bodybuilder. I don’t want to do all that stuff, but I wanted to feel like, OK, I’m gonna be single now. I gotta look my best, right?”
No, this is not exactly one of those inspiring I-did-it-and-so-can-you stories. This is really a cautionary tale. While she may have slimmed down, the star did not exactly do so in a healthy manner. So let’s let that be the caveat — don’t try this at home!
Yet at the same time, the underlying motivation, to take charge and reduce her weight, is undisputedly a solid one. She will now face the challenge than anyone does who diets and loses weight; making the healthy lifestyle changes to sustain the weight loss.
