Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, graces the cover of ‘Attitude’ magazine and makes history as the first British royal ever to appear on the cover of a gay publication. He’s also speaking out against bullying and homophobia. You can see the photos and the behind-the-scenes video and find out what he has to say in solidarity with the LGBT community.
Prince William invited personnel from ‘Attitude’ magazine and members of the LGBT community to Kensington Palace. The video below captures some of the conversations. Participants spoke of bullying and its impact upon their emotional and mental health.
In the historic first, published in the midst of Gay Pride Month, he is quoted as saying, ” No one should be bullied for their sexuality or any other reason and no one should have to put up with the kind of hate that these young people have endured in their lives.”
He went on to praise the people he met for their bravery and for giving “hope to people who are going through terrible bullying right now.” As they shared their stories of struggle, depression, hopelessness he lamented, saying “No-one should have to put up with the kind of hate that these young people have endured in their lives.”
He encouraged them to “speak to a trusted adult, a friend, a teacher, Childline, Diana Award or some other service and get the help you need.”
Diana Award, founded in his late mother, Princess Diana’s honor, has won accolades for its anti-bullying and empowerment programs for young people. In keeping with her legacy, he takes a strong public stance, telling the individuals he met “You should be proud of the person you are and you have nothing to be ashamed of.”
That we’ve gotten so far into the 21st century that the homophobia and bullying are still so pervasive is a sad commentary. Likewise, that this cover with Prince William is a milestone goes to show how much more progress lies ahead. Sure, it’s been nearly 50 years since Stonewall, which was launched the gay rights movement.
It’s only been in the past few years that in major countries same sex couples have been able to marry legally. And, as we know, there are more than a few countries in the world where the oppression is literally life threatening. Let’s hope that progress continues, and that this historic cover and story offers some much-needed validation and consolation.
