The shocking death of Christina Grimmie, a finalist on ‘The Voice’ has sparked an outpouring of reactions on Twitter and other social media from fellow music artists and celebrity. The 22-year-old singer was shot dead backstage after her concert in Orlando.
News broke late on Friday night that Christina Grimmie had been shot backstage at The Plaza Live theater in Orlando, Florida where she had performed with the band Your Last Exit.
According to CNN, a gunman walked up to her and shot her in the head. Her brother tackled the gunman to the ground who then managed to shoot and kill himself. Grimmie was rushed to the hospital. Hours later, Orlando Police confirmed the sad news on Twitter and her publicist issued a statement:
“It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord. She was shot at her show in Orlando and, unfortunately, didn’t survive the gunshot wounds. We ask at this time that you respect the privacy of her family and friends in their time of mourning.”
Soon thereafter, #PrayForChristina was replaced by #RIPChristina. While she did not attain the superstar status of some contestants since finishing in third place on NBC’s ‘The Voice’ in 2014, she had a sizable and devoted fan base which she had cultivated over the years on social media, particularly on YouTube where as a cover artist, she had several million followers and had seen numerous videos go viral — notably her cover of Demi Lovato’s ‘Skyscraper’ and David Guetta’s ‘Titanium.’ You can see a few below.
