Blake Shelton opened up about his relationship with Gwen Stefani in a live interview on ‘Today Show.’ He also performed the hit single ‘Came Here to Forget,’ which she inspired and which is from his new album ‘If I’m Honest.’ Find out what he had to say about finding love so quickly after divorce.
The public witnessed the relationship between Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani as it went from rumor and speculation to semi-confirmed via unnamed sources and now, in recent months, both have spoken openly. Both went from divorce from their spouses, respectively Miranda Lambert and Gavin Rossdale, to this new chapter. Both now have albums chronicling the experience. Stefani had her first solo album debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with ‘This Is What the Truth Feels Like.’
Now this time around, it’s Blake Shelton with ‘If I’m Honest.’ In a live interview on Today Show he spoke about the album and, in particular that duet with Gwen Stefani, ‘Go Ahead and Break My Heart’ which they recently performed on ‘The Voice.’ It marked their first ever joint performance and the chemistry was undeniable and to say the very least has proved popular. As of this writing, on YouTube there are more than four millions views of the video of their memorable performance.
He said that initially he’d written to song “just to try and impress” her and went on to elaborate saying, “I sent it to her just half done and said, ‘I wrote a song, kind of about you,.’ And she wrote the next verse and sent it back to me. And so, it was like, ‘Well, we have a song together. That’s kind of cool!’ I decided to put it on the record and this crazy stuff started happening.’
That being, of course, the unfolding story of their relationship, last fall as both were coaches on NBC’s The Voice.’ He said of the public’s interest in the relationship, “It’s a little weird, but I get it. We could not be, on paper, any more different. I’m a country singer and she’s a ska, rock, pop, whatever it is. It’s just an odd idea. But man, it’s a lot of fun. I’ve got to be honest about that.”
He also confirmed once again that the album is autobiographical. He said, “I figured because everyone else is cashing in on my life, I might as well too. So, that’s what the record is.”
Recently in an interview on Country Countdown, via E!News, he got even more candid about his new romance. He said, “I tell people all the time, ‘Gwen saved my life last year. She did.” He went on to add, “I think she’d tell you something similar about me.”
Continuing, he said, “This thing just happened…It saved my life. Period.”
During his appearance on ‘Today Show’ he also performed the album’s lead single, ‘Came Here to Forget,’ which in previous interviews he has said that Gwen Stefani inspired. Telling lines from the song such as — “Girl you’re getting over him / And I’m getting over her” — are characteristic of Shelton living up to the “honesty” of the album’s title.
