Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani debuted their new duet ‘Go Ahead and Break My Heart’ in a performance on NBC’s ‘The Voice.’ The video, which you can see right here, is going viral, as it also marks the first joint television performance of music superstars since their romance began.
The romance has unfolded in a most public manner, following the story lines fit for a country music hit, but this has been real life, that saw two power couples in the music industry split last year, and two of those four suddenly get together, all under the glare of gossip, rumor, speculation, as to be expected.
Gwen Stefani and Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale divorced, as did Blake Shelton and fellow country music superstar Miranda Lambert. Now suddenly with Stefani and Shelton both coaches on ‘The Voice’ last season their romance at times eclipsed the music competition itself although, with Jordan Smith, the front runner right from the start, there was, arguably less suspense in that realm anyway.
With all that as a backdrop, ‘Go Ahead and Break My Heart,’ was quite a song to make a musical debut, for a couple that got together shortly after real-life heartbreak and the seductive staging made the performance all the more enthralling. The lines are so suggestive that one doesn’t have to try hard to interpret, not with the likes of ‘ ‘sun setting on your last good try’ and ‘Here I am again with half a good-bye.’
The performance came just hours after the official release of the song, which is a single from Blake Shelton’s upcoming album, ‘If I’m Honest.’ It’s the second single from the new album, following the lead single, ‘Came Here to Forget.’
In an interview with People, Blake Shelton said of the performance, “We’re a little bit nervous about it, but nervous in a way that we can’t wait and nervous in a way that we hope people think it’s as good as we think it is.” He added, ” It’s like people getting a look at something personal for the first time.”
For her part, Gwen Stefani, has already put her heartbreak and new found love in song with her solo album, ‘This Is What the Truth Feels Like,’ which went on to become her first ever No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 as a solo artist.
In a recent interview on GMA, she spoke of how she turned her heartbreak into song, saying, “I had to make something good out of it. I’m going to make this into music.” She has previously confirmed that ‘Make Me Like You,’ is a song she penned about her new romance with Blake Shelton.
