Selena Gomez’s Revival Tour kicked off in Las Vegas, Nevada at Mandalay Bay. You can see a roundup of photos and video from social media along with the setlist and find out what the pop music star herself has to say about this, her first tour in more than two years.
Selena Gomez continues to forge a career now as a full-fledged pop music star, as her days as a Disney child and teen star are further and further in the distance. Even the longtime relationship with Justin Bieber is become a part of the past.
She gave several interviews about the album ‘Revival’ from which the tour takes its name, and spoke about her quest for independence. It’s not just new music, it’s a new beginning in many ways, as it’s been more than two years since Selena Gomez went on tour. It was in 2013 that she embarked upon the Stars Dance Tour, which she cut short. Long after the fact, she opened up about her battle with lupus which led her to cancel and spoke of her chemotherapy treatment. As Billboard reports, she’s donating some of the proceeds into research for the disease.
She also told the publication about her intentions with the new tour, saying, “This show is so centered around me, and I mean that in a way of confidence, of strength.”
Elaborating, she added, “It has a beautiful feel to it, but it is about me, so if I wanted to come in one day and say I want to change [a song in the show] or add this, I can do that. That’s the first time I’ve ever really been able to do that in my life. And I feel, I feel great about it. It’s not me making sure I hit all the dance moves.”
She went on to echo some of her previous comments and said, “There’s so much I want to prove to myself for this tour and it’s just based on me, it’s based on my voice, it’s based on what I say to my crowd…That’s all I really want.”
Lately, in the days leading up to the tour kick off, she drew even more headlines for declaring that she’s not going to have a squad, Taylor Swift style Quite flatly, she told EW, “I made a joke about this [when] Taylor was in the room, and she looked at me like, “You should totally do that!” I was like, “I can’t have all those people come on my stage!” She’s like, “Why not?” “Because I’m not Taylor Swift!”
She went on to explain, ” I love being able to work with other artists I admire, but I have a lot to do on my own before I am willing to make it all about embracing other people.”
While the tour set-list encompasses music that spans her entire career including the songs she sang with her former band, The Scene, one song is notably absent; the Justin Bieber-inspired “The Heart Wants What It Wants.” The song is from her greatest hits compilation album, released in 2014.
She told EW, “There are things that I can’t do. I won’t be performing this on this tour because I don’t want to. It’s like when you smell a scent and it takes you back to a place that maybe wasn’t the best place. That stuff is a little bit more difficult.”
Not a surprise, as fans will remember her debut performance of that song was an emotional one indeed, at the 2014 American Music Awards.
