The 36-year-old Rosie Mercado has achieved international fame via the ‘Curvy Girls’ reality TV show as well as her appearance in an episode of National Geographic Channel’s ‘Taboo’ when she was among the contestants in the Miss Plus America Pageant.

In a new interview with People magazine, she opened up about her weight loss journey, and revealed that her highest weight was 410 pounds and her hips measured 70-inches. As seen in the before and after pictures below, it’s an understatement to call it dramatic.

She said that she had a moment of truth that motivated her to lose weight. Mercado called it an “‘aha’ moment” when she was told she needed to purchase two airline tickets. After that, over the course of a year and a half, she said she was able to lose approximately 100 pounds on her own with diet and exercise.

She spoke out about her decision to undergo the gastric sleeve surgery, saying, “As soon as I hit 320, I was like, no I cannot go back to being 410.” She went on to explain, saying, “I was going back and forth with my weight, and I saw a documentary on the [gastric] sleeve. I said, ‘You know what I’m going to do this. It’s the next part of my journey.’ ”

She spoke of the challenges she faced in the aftermath, and the changes in her diet she had to make, including cutting out soda, dessert, pasta and rice. Mercado said, “I don’t think you could be prepared for the work that has to be done psychologically.” She went on to say, “Anything that bloats just completely went away…You start really educating yourself on eating healthy, eating lean and eating really small portions.”

She said of the surgery, “It’s not an easy walk. Surgery is just a tool. It’s not guaranteed success. Success comes from the discipline – it forces you to wake up and pay attention to what you’re eating. It’s a lifestyle.”

She said her goal was not “to be a size 6″ and added, “I just want to be healthy and fit. Being obese is putting your life at risk every single day.”

She also opened up about her decision to get skin removal surgery after she had lost an additional 200 pounds.

She spoke of the discomfort and health problems that 20 pounds of excess skin on her abdomen was causing, saying she was wearing Spanx all the time. She said, “I couldn’t run without Spanx because of the weight of the skin. You lose all this weight, you’re excited, and then you take your clothes off and you have all this excess skin. New issues start coming up.”

She said of the skin removal surgery and full tummy tuck, “That has been by far the most painful journey of my entire life…It was burning, aching, tubes coming everywhere.”

Now, in the aftermath, with her 240-pound weight loss her current weight is 170 pounds. She dropped numerous dress sizes — from size 36 to her current size 12 to 14 . She also told People how she is able to maintain the weight loss. She said that she does boot camp classes three times a week and runs and walks the other days of the week. Her diet is comprised of lean protein, fish, vegetables and no sugar.
