In a new interview with The Edit by Net-A-Porter, the now 62-year-old Kim Basinger said she and her ex-husband 58-year-old Alec Baldwin are “cool now,” adding, “Life goes on.”

It’s been a long journey to “cool” however. In the days before social media and the ubiquitous and instantaneous online world, there was the Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger marriage dominating tabloids and headlines, as that’s essentially all there was back then in the 1990s. The couple originally met on the set of the 1990 movie ‘The Marrying Man’ in which they portrayed a playboy and a nightclub singer, respectively. They tied the knot three years later.

Years later, in 2001, Basinger filed for divorce and the public custody battle over their young child, Ireland Baldwin, was quite the spectacle, online and offline. The real-life drama dominated the headlines throughout the Aughts, culminating in that 2007 voicemail that leaked online in which Alec Baldwin was heard yelling mercilessly at the then 11-year-old Ireland.

Kim Basinger said of the split and its impact on their daughter, “Divorce is hard on a kid, no matter how you cut it. And ours was very public and nasty. So I brought up Ireland in a very unconventional way.”

She went on to say, “I just wanted her to be free. If she wanted to have her friends over and write over the walls with pen, that was fine,” she said. “I wanted her childhood to be full of love and light and animals and friends.”

She even opened up about that fateful decision to accept the role in ‘The Marrying Man,’ saying, “I was teeter-tottering because I had also been offered Sleeping with the Enemy [which eventually starred Julia Roberts].”

She went on to add, “Isn’t it funny that I turned down Sleeping with the Enemy and then I went on to sleep with the enemy!”

She also reflected upon the choices she had made over the years, saying, “I think it’s possible to date someone when you’re 20 and end up with them when you’re 55. Anything is possible. But my taste in men has changed a lot over the years.”

Continuing, she added, “When you’re young you’re attracted to the ‘bad boy,’ only to find out that they’re actually just bullies or insecure – you’re attracted to fantasies.”

And speaking of such, Kim Basinger who co-starred opposite Mickey Rourke in the infamous 1990s movie, ‘9-1/2 Weeks,” which was, quite literally the “Fifty Shades of Grey” of the 1990s, and just as controversial spoke out about why she chose to be cast in the “Fifty Shades” sequel, “Fifty Shades Darker.” She portrays Christian Grey’s former lover, Elena Lincoln.

She said that her daughter “insisted.” Elaborating, she said her daughter told her, “You have to do it, Mom, it’s really powerful for women. Your character is about a woman’s power.’ At first I thought, ‘Eww, I can’t do that dominatrix stuff, it’s not me.’ But it’s not like that. My character’s strength is more emotional and mental – she shows Christian all his moves.”

A surprising answer, for sure, and it’s just one of the many tidbits in the lengthy and rare interview. You can see it in its entirety here and see Kim Basinger’s photos below.
