Ellen Pompeo opened up about the success of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ since the shocking exit of Patrick Dempsey’s character. Watch the interview that’s quickly going viral as the star has much to say about the new season of the hit series during her appearance on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show.’
The 46-year-old Ellen Pompeo portrays the titular character, Dr. Meredith Grey on Shonda Rhimes’ hit series ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ As the series roars into its 12th season, she’s making the promo rounds and this included a chat with Ellen DeGeneres. And what a chat it turned out to be as she broached the topic of Patrick Dempsey’s exit from the series.
After all, it’s not just ‘Game of Thrones’ that has a lock on shocking deaths of characters. Fans, frankly, are still reeling after Dempsey’s character, Dr. Derek Shepherd a.k.a. McDreamy was killed off last season.
Well, Pompeo, in characteristic candor, went right straight to the point, saying, “Everybody thought because Patrick was leaving that it wouldn’t do well, but it’s doing very well.”
She went on to say, “It’s amazing how much you get done without a penis!” Well, naturally, that provoked quite a response from the studio audience. Yes, that kind of self-conscious laughter followed by laughter over the self-consciousness over same. After all, that’s not quite the encapsulation of the character or the actor that anyone was expecting!
When the uproar concluded, Pompeo continued, and added, “We miss him dearly, but yeah, the show is doing very well.”
As for the host, she merely said, “I’m just gonna let that one go.”
On a more serious note, she reflected upon and acknowledged that fans are still shocked over the death. She said, “I think the change is part of the reason why the show goes on so long. I think people tune in to see, ‘What is the show look like now? What is Meredith going to do without Derek?’ “I think they get so upset about the change, but change is precisely what everyone always needs to sort of get to the next place.
Continuing, she went on to speak of how Dempsey’s departure has affected her, personally. She said, For me, too, it’s, ‘How do I act without him?’ It’s more challenging for me. I’m more invested. I have to work harder to find my groove without my missing part. It keeps me more engaged. I’m more engaged this season than I have been in a long time, because for the fans, I want to make sure the quality stays good.”
She said of the show’s devoted fans, “They’re there for us. I want to be there for them.”
Anticipation for the new season couldn’t’ be higher and, Pompeo’s comments are being examined and re-examined. As always, when there’s one of these shock deaths, it remains to be seen what happens going forward. We’ll look back at this interview and know one way or another!
