Gwen Stefani opened up about how painful her divorce from Gavin Rossdale was and on how writing the songs for her new album helped her to heal and move on. In one of her most candid interviews to date, she also spoke about her new boyfriend Blake Shelton and how she wrote the song ‘Make Me Like You.’
When Gwen Stefani debuted the first single ‘Used to Love You’ from her new solo album ‘This Is What the Truth Feels Like’ last summer it was just weeks after she and former husband, musician and Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale, had announced their split. In the weeks that followed, the former couple’s lives became a tabloid spectacle complete with a scandal, as Rossdale stood accused of having an affair with the nanny, Mindy Mann.
For a time, the No Doubt frontwoman was letting the music speak for itself. Now, in recent weeks with the release of the album in full, ‘This Is What the Truth Feels Like,’ she’s opening up more and more.
On ‘GMA’ she spoke about how painful the split from her husband of 13 years was, and when asked how she was able to channel her heartbreak into what has become her first solo album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, she said, “I was embarrassed. Like I can’t go down. This is not who I am. I’m not going to fail. I had to make something good out of it. I’m going to make this into music.”
Continuing, she said, “Some of these songs are hot off the presses. It was magic. There was magic in the room. I was in the studio by my label.”
She went on to open up about how devastated she felt, despite the determination to forge ahead and make music. She said, “I was put in the studio by my label, I didn’t care about anything, I was just literally trying to get up in the morning.”
She went on to say, “I got there and said I just want to write a record, I don’t care about anything but getting this out and healing and being honest and real and truthful. I don’t care what style it is or being on the radio or charts or anything.”
She added, “Why would that matter to me at this point? Nothing matters except for just trying not to die right now.”
But as we know, or at least, as tabloids and celebrity outlets began to report, the story was taking a different turn. As Gwen Stefani embarked on her first season as a coach on NBC’s ‘The Voice’ she and her fellow coach, Blake Shelton had more in common than being on a hit reality TV series. Their romance, in fact, added another layer of texture and intrigue to the show.
And, when asked about the song ‘Make Me Like You,’ which Stefani has previously acknowledged is about Blake Shelton, and how quickly she wrote it, Stefani said, “That song was one of my favorites to write. It came out. I was feeling that way. It’s what I felt that day. I miss you right now, here it is.”
She went on to describe the amazing songwriting process, saying, “Everybody in the room was kind of, like, whoa, this is happening right now. It was written fast; 10, 15 minutes the whole thing just done.”
It’s gone on to become the second single of the album, and while it has not found chart success, it’s drawn interest nonetheless as autobiography, and for the unusual music video which, in partnership with retailer Target, she shot as a live commercial during the Grammy Awards.
