Renee Zellweger opened up about the speculation over her “changing face” and plastic surgery rumors. The Oscar-winning actress and ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ star also voiced her thoughts on social media and the endless chatter during her live TV interview on Today Show.
It’s been more than a year that social media and major media alike suffered a takeover when the talk about Renee Zellweger’s “changing face” assumed the seeming monumental importance of a global event. Yes, she was suddenly trending in all of social media and gossip sites and tabloids, of course, ran with the story as the speculation as to what the then-45-year-old had done to her face.
While on Today Show, to speak about the much-anticipated sequel movie, ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby,’ the now-45-year-old took the opportunity to revisit the phony controversy when interviewer, Sheinelle Jones, asked her if it bothered her or got to her. She said, “It’s not really part of my life. It’s part of the job, that I don’t really experience except when I step into this arena.”
Continuing, she added, “In my home I’m not aware of it. I don’t do any kind of social media, so I don’t see it. I like to have – I guess you would call them real experiences.”
At the time, back in 2014 when suddenly the buzz was, sadly, impossible to ignore, Z had told People, I’m glad folks think I look different! I’m living a different, happy, more fulfilling life, and I’m thrilled that perhaps it shows.”
Naturally that didn’t satisfy speculators who have to this day continued to speculate. But in this day and age it’s the classic no-win situation for women in Hollywood who reach their 40s and beyond. They’re either slammed for having faces that they can’t move anymore or their every wrinkle is scrutinized and criticized.
As for that long-awaited sequel, it’s the third in the franchise based on the bestselling Helen Fielding novels which began originally in 2001, and it arrives more than a decade after 2004’s’Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.’ And yes, thankfully, the title character has been given permission to age and finds herself at 43, suddenly pregnant.
Much like the superhero blockbuster movies, little is known about the plot, and the recently released trailer tells us little more than that her pregnancy is a surprise to her. But that’s not the end of the surprises, in the interview Z revealed that the cast doesn’t know how the movie will end! She said, three different endings were shot and thus, she herself doesn’t know which character — Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy or Patrick Dempsey’s Jack Qwant is the father.
She said, “They kept us guessing, yeah, because you never know people with cell phones and talking, and I might slip up and tell my mom.”
Well, we will all have to be surprised, at least until such time as the spoilers emerge. You can see the full interview below as Renee Zellweger dishes on the new movie and, of course, that topic that the celebrity-watching world can’t let go of, her “changing face.”
