Garry Shandling Dead: Twitter Reactions from Fellow Comedians and Celebrities

March 25, 2016

The death of comedy legend Garry Shandling at age 66 has come as a sudden shock and there has been quite an intense outpouring of reactions on Twitter from fellow comedians and celebrities alike. Many paid tribute to the innovative creator of ‘It’s Garry Shandling Show’ and ‘The Larry Sanders Show.’ Here’s a roundup of what is being said.

Garry Shandling

It was TMZ that first broke the news that Garry Shandling had been rushed to the a hospital in L.A. where he died. The site claimed the cause was a massive heart attack and that as recently as that morning, he had been in touch with people and apparently healthy. The LAPD confirmed his death but not the cause, as other news outlets picked up the story.

Shocking news to say the least, and once we collectively realized that this was not one a social media death hoax but instead a sad reality, the response worldwide was immense.

For decades, Garry Shandling had been a trailblazer, dating back to his first major sitcom, the 1980s Showtime series, “It’s Garry Shandling Show’ which was brilliant and innovative for its time, dispensing with the usual accoutrements of sitcoms, such as the laugh track, and instead, becoming a meta-comedy show, breaking down the fourth wall.

He continued his innovations with the HBO series ‘The Larry Sanders Show’ in the 1990s as it was a searing send-up of the world of late-night television talk shows.

Comedians and critics alike cite him as a major influence in comedy and television, with his visionary work seen as the harbinger of more recent comedy hits such as ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ and ’30 Rock’ among others.

He was recently seen in an episode of Jerry Seinfeld’s popular Web series ‘Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee’ in an episode, titled, ‘It’s Great that Garry Shandling Is Still Alive,’ which now, in retrospect is especially bittersweet, not least for its title, of course, but also for Shandling’s discussion of his mortality and funeral.

Fellow comedians as well as the entertainment community as a whole have taken to Twitter especially, our instantaneous virtual town square at such times, to express shock, sadness and condolences. Here’s a roundup of what’s being said.

Reactions to the death are ongoing as #GarryShandling and #RIPGarryShandling hashtags are trending on Twitter, Instagram and other social media. Fans, comedy stars and celebrities pay tribute to the comedy icon we have lost much, much too soon.
