Elton John performed a free surprise concert in West Hollywood at the Sunset Strip, with Lady Gaga. See the photos and video highlights as well as the full set-list and find out what the music critics have to say of this latest performance from the legendary artist.
There are surprise album releases and, yes, there are also surprise concerts. Elton John delivered on the latter, announcing it the night before it was to take place. And not only that, it was a free concert and streamed live on AOL. For those who missed it, no worries, as the one-time event has been lavishly documented in social media and major news outlets have weighed in as well.
The venue on the Sunset Strip, was the old Tower Records parking lot. Way back in the day before iTunes and Amazon took care of all of our digital musical needs, there were that chain of stores, coast to coast where fans could buy vinyl records and cassettes. Now, this one, an iconic fixture now owned by Gibson Guitars, served as the surprise location for a rousing afternoon concert.
Lady Gaga joined him at the end for a spirited rendition of one of his most iconic hits, ‘Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.’ The performance, which saw her in a blue 1940s style dress, is the night before her big appearance at the 88th Oscars where she’ll sing her Oscar-nominated song, “Till It Happens to You,” from the documentary, ‘The Hunting Ground,’ a searing expose on college campus rape.
Elton John gave the concert as a thank-you to West Hollywood which for the past 23 years is where he has held his Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party, just a night before what will be the 24th time. As Billboard reports, he said in a statement, in part of the city, “We are profoundly grateful for their generous support, so I wanted to do something special just for them by giving our West Hollywood fans and supporters a surprise concert. Thank you, West Hollywood!”
He’s been much in the news of late with a new album, ‘Wild Crazy Night,’ his 32nd, which has received positive reviews from critics. And now, along with his Elton John Band and his special guest out there on the Sunset Strip, it was all about celebration and giving back.
According to the LA Times he told the audience, “I could have probably bought Los Angeles for the money I spent in Tower Records.”
Here’s the complete set-list:
