Adele dazzled at the Brit Awards, singing ‘When We Were Young’ and winning British Album of the Year for ’25’ and three other awards. She gave emotional acceptance speeches and even offered public support to Kesha in her lawsuit against Dr. Luke. Now the video is going viral and you can see it right here and get the full scoop on her memorable night.
It was just a few days ago and on a different continent that Adele’s Grammy Awards performance of ‘All I Ask’ went awry through no fault of her own, due to sound glitches. Not to mention, her phenomenal, internationally bestselling, chart topping album ’25’ being ineligible this year for awards. But of course, next year’s Grammys we can safely predict will be quite a different story!
But back in her native UK at the Brit Awards at London’s O2 Arena, all was so much different and so much more triumphant. Not only was ‘When We Were Young’ her characteristically flawless performance, but she did not sit in the audience empty handed.
Early on, receiving her first award, British Female Solo Artist, she took to the stage, saying, in part, “To come back after so long away and be so warmly received is really lovely. Thank you so much.” She went on to say, “And to all the other girls that were nominated, thank you for letting me be in your company. You’re all incredible. You’re all amazing, and it’s a privilege to be alongside you.”
Adele made a point to single out and thank her “management and my record label for embracing the fact that I’m a woman and being encouraged by it.”
She then went on to pointedly conclude her speech, saying, “I’d also like to take this moment to publicly support Kesha.” She becomes yet another major music artist to voice support to Kesha who is embroiled in a highly publicized lawsuit against producer Dr. Luke whom she alleges sexually assaulted her.
From Taylor Swift to Lady Gaga and many, many more have voiced support in social media and, in the case of Taylor Swift, donated a quarter of a million dollars. Celebrities have voiced support as well, including ‘Girls’ star Lena Dunham who penned a powerful essay. And so yes, in the midst of personal triumph, Adele took the opportunity to lend her voice to this exponentially increasing chorus of support.
It marked her first Brit Award since 2013 and it wasn’t going to be the last she’d receive this time around. By the time the evening was over, she’d collected awards four awards; along with British Female Solo Artist, she picked up British Single for ‘Hello’ and British Album of the Year for ’25’ as well as the Global Success Award.
She was at her most emotional, accepting the Global Success Award and she even dropped an F-bomb, saying, “You’re probably getting f—ing bored of me anyway.” And, in her final acceptance speech, after she thanked a number of people including her boyfriend Simon Konecki, she added, “Not bad for a girl from Tottenham that don’t like flying!”
And, as noted, not least, Adele delivered a stunning performance of ‘When We Were Young,’ the bittersweet ballad that is the second single of her ’25’ album. It more than made up for the Grammys. She had told host Ellen DeGeneres how devastating the performance at the Grammys had been, saying, “I cried pretty much all day. In fairness I would have cried if it went really well, as well. If it was a standout performance, I would have cried as well. I always cry.”
And true to form, she did just that, but this time it was pure triumph. You can see the full replay video of Adele’s four acceptance speeches and live performance below!
