Amy Schumer took to the stage at the Critics’ Choice Awards and gave a hilarious and memorable acceptance speech for the MVP Award. See the full video and photos and find out why the ‘Train Wreck’ star has, once again, become a social media sensation.
Truthfully, one has to wonder if the organizers gave Amy Schumer the MVP Award for the ratings. It’s a sure bet that she would deliver her signature zingers which, of course, will live on as viral video.
Yes, true to form, the 34-year-old actress and comedian did deliver. After all, she had quite the breakthrough moment last year at yet another awards show, the Glamour Women of the Year Awards taking the Trailblazer Award.
Now, a hit movie later, her Hollywood A-list status is secured. As she took to the stage, after an introduction by Judd Apatow, her director for her breakthrough movie, ‘Train Wreck,’ the audience had given her a standing ovation. Her first words, “Sit down, now you’re going to resent me because you had to stand.” And with that, we were in for and acceptance speech such as only she could give!
She said of herself, “I am plus-plus-size actress Amy Schumer,” and gesturing with the statuette, she went on to say, “Thank you for this trophy, covering the reason I have to write my own.”
She then held the statuette squarely in front of her torso and said, “If you’re an actress and you have this area right here, you have to write your own stuff if you want to get it made.”
Yes, it’s a zinger. Delivered with humor, but sadly, quite true in Hollywood. Much like creator and star of HBO’s ‘Girls’ has followed much that same route.
But Amy Schumer was not yet finished with zinging us all, as she continued with the body image and body shaming theme. She spoke of her photo in the Pirelli calendar picture, which was shot by legendary photogrpaher Annie Leibovitz.
She said, “This is where I get really brave. That’s what you want everybody to say when a naked photo of you goes viral, you want them to say; ‘What a brave photo.’ Like wow, thanks. Thank you.”
Later in the speech after giving a nod to the critics — “I felt very seen and heard by you guys and understood” — she expressed her gratitude to Judd Apatow, and said, “Thank you so much, I can’t believe that this whole year has happened and that Judd let me tell my story and I’m so happy I don’t have to talk about how autobiographical it is anymore.”
Towards the end, she acknowledged her new boyfriend, Ben Hanisch, who was in the audience (you can see a photo below) as the new couple had made their awards season red carpet debut that same night.
She also dropped the comedy for a moment, to reflect upon the mass shooting at a screening of that very movie that has brought her such fame, and to reference her gun control advocacy which, saw her teaming up with her cousin, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer of New York.
She said, “I want to thank Mayci Breaux and Jillian Johnson, who died in Lafayette because a mentally ill person got their hands on a gun, but we can end gun violence together.”
And with that, she concluded. Watch the full replay video of Amy Schumer’s acceptance speech at the Critics’ Choice Awards below!
