The death of Alan Rickman, the legendary British actor known for his role as Professor Snape in the ‘Harry Potter’ movies and as the villain in ‘Die Hard’ has come as sudden and shocking news. Many fellow actors, public figures and celebrities have taken to Twitter to express sorrow and to offer tributes, condolences, and share memories. Here is a roundup of what is being said.
This sudden and sad news broke on early Thursday morning, January 14th that Alan Rickman passed away. The statement was as follows: “The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends.”
The world did not know of his struggle with cancer, which made the news of his death all the more shocking. Here was an actor who’s become so endemic to some of our finest moments in cinematic history.
It’s difficult to think of the many Harry Potter movies and not think of him as Professor Severus Snape; it’s how he won an entirely new audience and fan base. But many years before that he made quite the impression with his film debut in 1988 in ‘Die Hard’ as the German terrorist Hans Gruber, the villain pitted against Bruce Willis’ John McClane.
Yes, at 69, which these days is often the prime of life for artists of all disciplines, including actors. It is much too soon to have to look back at a legacy and a filmography that has now come to an abrupt end. The death hits especially hard as we lost another artistic giant, David Bowie, just days ago, also of cancer and also just 69 years old.
Not surprisingly, J.K. Rowling was among the first to take to Twitter to express sorrow. With typical eloquence, she said, “There are no words to express how shocked and devastated I am to hear of Alan Rickman’s death. He was a magnificent actor & a wonderful man.” She went on in a second Tweet to offer condolences for the family, including his wife, Rima Horton whom he married recently. The couple had been together for nearly 40 years; since the late 1970s.
The tributes have been numerous, as his career had breadth and depth, spanning from Hollywood to the Royal Shakespeare Company where he first got his start. Here is a roundup of what is being said at the sudden news of his passing.
