Grace Dove opens up about her breakout performance in ‘The Revenant.’ The Canadian actress is rising to fame for her portrayal of the wife of frontiersman Hugh Glass, portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio. She speaks about what it was like to work with the Oscar-nominated actor.
Grace Dove has had a breakout role in the critically acclaimed and Oscar-buzzed Western ‘The Revenant,’directed by Oscar-winner Alejandro Gonzlez Irritu (‘Babel’ and ‘Birdman’). Based on the Michael Punk book, ‘The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge’ which in turn was inspired by true events in the life of Hugh Glass in the 19th century.
Glass was buried alive after he was presumed dead after being attacked by a bear. From there, an intense and emotional thriller plays out on the screen. It’s not a matter how how many nominations the film will receive during the awards season but how many its collective stars and director will respectively take home.
It’s the kind of movie that critics and industry alike shower with praise, recognition and accolades. And when newcomers find themselves in such movies, the result can be instant global fame. Such is the case with Grace Dove, a Native American, and member of the Shuswap tribe who now resides in Vancouver, Canada. Yes, she is such a newcomer that biography details, as of this writing, are few. She doesn’t yet have a Wikipedia page, but that will likely change quickly.
But as she makes the rounds doing red carpet appearances (photos below) and as word of her impressive performance travels worldwide, we may witness her rising fame this awards season.
In an interview with CBC, Grace Dove opened up about her experience in the intense drama. She said of working with Leonardo DiCaprio and what it was like to meet him on set for the first time. She also spoke of how he looked after her, as a newcomer, checking in with her after what she called “a really intense scene” that she was having a hard time shaking off. She went on to say, “He always had a little bit of an eye on me.”
Asked what it was like to work with him romantically, she said, “It’s crazy, obviously everyone’s in love with Dicaprio, who wouldn’t be?” She went on to add, “And to be able to work with him intimatelyh, I went in there not having too many expectations and I walked out the movie just like, ‘Oh! he’s really just a wonderful, wonderful guy, inside and out. Honest and humble.'”
In another interview, she spoke highly of the director, saying, “Alejandro has so much respect for our culture and I really appreciate that.” She went on to say, “”The movie industry has come a long way, but it still has a long way to go. I’m so excited to be part of it. I’m so proud of my heritage, but I’m not going to let that put me in a box either.”
And one hopes this does play out, and we have a breakout star who goes on find more roles that are challenging and worthy of her talent and that she continues to rise in prominence. We should be, collectively as a society, long past stereotypes and pigeonholing when it comes to what entertains us.
