Dakota Johnson Covers British Vogue, Talks ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Stigma, Hollywood Sexism

January 7, 2016

Dakota Johnson graces the cover of British Vogue, poses for sultry photos, and talks about ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and the stigma she has faced. She also denounces Hollywood sexism from a powerful vantage point, as the daughter and granddaughter of legendary actresses who have seen their careers shrivel.

The 25-year-old Dakota Johnson has risen from being the relatively unknown daughter and granddaughter of Hollywood royalty with ‘Fifty Shades of Grey.’ Despite a few supporting roles in such hit movies as ‘The Social Network’ and ’21 Jump Street,’ she had not yet escaped the celebrity offspring identity, as the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith and the granddaughter of Tippe Hedrin.

Now she’s known for portraying Anastasia Steele opposite Jamie Dornan’s Christian Grey in the screen adaptation of EL James’ ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and that as we can imagine has been the proverbial mixed blessing. The movie, aside from failing to achieve critical acclaim is also not sweeping awards nominations. It was not the kind of role that was going to bring her a Best Actress Oscar nod.

Dakota Johnson was extremely outspoken on these perceptions, and on Hollywood sexism and ageism. She’s got context after all. Her mother, Melanie Griffith, now 58 years old, was an A-list star in the 1980s and 1990s in such movies as “Something Wild” and “Working Girl.” And, as noted, her grandmother, Tippi Hedren, 85 years old, has found a place in cinematic history as the woman in a 1960s blonde beehive terrorized by the titular characters of Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds.’ You can see pictures of all of them below.

She told British Vogue, in her characteristically candid and profane manner, “Why isn’t my mother in movies? She’s an extraordinary actress!” She went on to say, “Why isn’t my grandmother in movies? This industry is f—king brutal.”

She also reflected upon her own plight, and said, “No matter how tough you are, sometimes there’s the feeling of not being wanted. It’s absurd and cut-throat. Whenever I have downtime, I’m unsure that I will ever work again. I don’t know what it is, but it’s a definite thing that happens to me.”

As for her future prospects, she said, “The more work I do, the more the general public sees the different things I can do,” she explained to the mag. “Do I think [Fifty Shades] opened doors? Yeah. More people know my name.”

She’s since been in seen in ‘Black Mass,’ the biopic of the gangster Whitey Bulger, portrayed by Johnny Depp. But she’ll be returning as Anastasia Grey in the sequel ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ and after that, yet another sequel. Yes, in much the same fashion as other big franchises, but, safe to say, this isn’t exactly a young adult franchise along the likes of ‘The Twilight Saga’ or ‘The Hunger Games.’ We’re all in new territory with this one, as, there’s never been anything quite like the ‘Fifty Shades’ phenomena.
