Robert De Niro opened up about the movie ‘Joy’ which is based on the life story of ‘Miracle Mop’ inventor and QVC star Joy Mangano. The legendary actor opened up about what it was like to be reunited with Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence in a third David O. Russell-directed film.
The two-time Oscar winner gave a rare television interview for ‘GMA’ (video below) and spoke about this latest, and much-Oscar buzzed movie. As with any David O. Russell movie these days there are high expectations and hopes. The critics this time around have been mostly but not universally favorable. And, in this Christmas movie season dominated by ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ breaking all kinds of cinematic records, the movie has not had quite the fanfare of those previous two movies ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ and ‘American Hustle’ that united the cast.
Nonetheless, one can’t overlook a movie which such Hollywood heavyweights. For Russell and the cast, this is somewhat of a departure as it is based on a true story and its subject, Joy Mangano — whom Jennifer Lawrence poertrays — has herself been on the promo trail as well, expressing her enthusiasm and approval.
Robert De Niro portrays Rudy, the divorced father of Joy Mangano who moves into her house and it’s a more extensive role this time around, to the delight of fans, after the cameo appearance in ‘American Hustle.’ In the GMA interview, he said of that cameo, “I wanted to do it to be a part of the group again.”
And he’s very much in the thick of the movie this time around. He clashes with Edgar Ramirez, who portrays Mangano’s ex-husband who also lives in the house and, as trailers have revealed, the two of them offer some of the comedic moments in the movie.
He was asked about David O. Russell’s comment that he he enjoys giving him a part of a man in love” in movies. De Niro said, “He also has a temper. He always thinks he’s in love. My character thinks he’s a romantic, but also, he’s not so sure at times. He suspects he might be the same type. Takes one to know one.”
He also reflected on what it was like working with Isabella Rossellini, who portrays his girlfriend in the movie, and whom he has known for more than 25 years.
And in a moment tailor made for cinephiles everywhere, a clip of De Niro’s screen debut was shown, which he himself said he had never seen. He’s an extra in a restaurant scene in the 1965 French film ‘Three Rooms in Manhattan’ directed by Marcel Carné. Yes, 50 years ago, the acting legend got his start, puffing a cigarette at a table in the background.
