Chris Hemsworth graces the cover of Parade magazine, with director Ron Howard, and in an interview opens up about the decision his family made to relocate to Australia. He speaks of the pressures of fame, coping with paparazzi and what he values most in his life.
The 32-year-old Australian has become among Hollywood’s A list as a star or costar of a staggering number of blockbusters including the Thor movies and The Avengers franchise as well as Snow White and the Huntsman. Now he’s taking on a different role entirely that doesn’t involve outer space or super human powers. He’s among the cast of Ron Howard’s ‘In the Heart of the Sea’ bringing to the big screen the true story that was the impetus of Herman Melville’s ‘Moby Dick.’
He said of it, ““I got swept up in the story…Humans tested to absolute extremes: It was a big challenge.” He went on to say, “I had come from Australia to America trying to be this type of actor.”
He added, “This was the first film that gave me an opportunity to take a risk, to be who I want to be. It really was the first film where I just let it happen. It came from inside me.”
He went on to speak of life in L.A. and why he and wife Elsa Pataky and their children relocated to Australia. He said, “In the space of three years, we had our kids and simultaneously my career was happening, and everything changed.” The couple has three children, a three-year old daughter, India Rose and two-and-a-half year old twin sons, Tristan and Sasha.
As he revealed, fame has had its downside as well. He said, “We’d leave the house and there would be six paparazzi out in front. In L.A., more than anywhere else in the world, paparazzi are everywhere, 24/7. We felt suffocated. The agitation you feel from the paparazzi rippled in the house.”
Hemsworth said of his life now in a “quiet little surf town” outside of Melbourne, Australia. He said, “There are other things in my life now—family, kids.”
Reflecting upon his priorities now in life, he added, “I don’t want to have to be in the position where I care if the phone stops ringing. I’m OK about potentially not acting. That just may be me trying to convince myself in case it does happen, but I’ve always been weirdly aware of that.”
Hemsworth went on to share an experience with his daughter, He said, “Sitting in the car with my head on her lap and her singing to me, there was this understanding of, ‘Wow she’s looking after Dad, and that’s her job.’ You know? And that was such a joy. Oh, there’s nothing better! It was the happiest moment of my life.”
