‘Scandal’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ creator Shonda Rhimes opened up about her 127-pound weight loss, shared her success secrets and spoke about other positive changes she has made in her life and documented in her new memoir, ‘Year Of Yes.’
The 46-year-old multi-Emmy-winning television writer and producer has drawn much notice of late for her stunning weight loss. She’s walked the red carpet in recent months and the transformation has been nothing less than dramatic, as you can see in the before and after pic below.
Now in her new book, ‘Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person,’ Shonda Rhimes outlines what she has done to bring about this and many other positive changes by literally saying yes to what previously she had been afraid of or otherwise avoided. She had a lively, and inspiring discussion on her new book and her transformation on both ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ and on ‘GMA.’
Rhimes told host Ellen DeGeneres, ‘The more fears I conquered, the more I felt like I can do this too or I can do that too. And so I lost weight.”
She went on to open up about her moment of truth that became the impetus for taking action to lose the pounds. Rhimes said, “I got on an airplane, I was going to New York from L.A. and it was first class and it was going to be really comfortable.”
She went on to say, “I got in my seat, I took off my shoes I got out by book and I went to buckle the seat belt and it wouldn’t buckle and I thought to myself, something is wrong with the seat belt; it’s broken. But it wasn’t the seat belt, it was me.”
Continuing, she said, “And I thought when I can get a seat belt extender or I can die and not get a seat belt extender, but maybe the plane will crash or I fly out ofa my seat, when we take off and I decided I will risk it and fly out of my seat and not say anything.”
She also spoke about her inspiration for weight loss, three her daughters. She said, “I have a 3-year-old and a 13-year-old and a 2-year-old, and I wanted to be around for them, be healthy.”
In an interview on ‘Good Morning America’ she told ABC News’ Juju Chang how she overcame her anxiety and panic attacks that were negatively impacting her career. She said, “I always said no to everything. I went to work, came home. That was it.”
She went on to describe how she made a concerted effort to say yes to everything instead of no, and how life changing it was. This led her to make an appearance on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ for instance, she said, and to deliver the commencement address at Dartmouth College, her alma mater.
Asked about her weight loss success secret, she said, “I work really hard in every other area of my life. Why wouldn’t I throw myself into being healthy and losing weight?”
And the results have been inspiring; 127 pounds is no slight achievement, after all. Not only the physical transformation, but, as she writes and speaks about, overcoming the fears. There’s a lesson in there for us all on facing fears and, with courage, conquering them. You can see Shonda Rhimes’ before and after weight loss photos below along with the interview videos!
