Gwen Stefani graces the cover of InStyle magazine and opens up about her divorce from former husband, Gavin Rossdale and the years leading up to it. With ‘Used to Love’ you climbing the charts just one of many reasons the No Doubt frontwoman is constantly in the news, her first post-split interview is getting plenty of buzz.

With the rapidly developing story, print media just can’t keep up with the life of Gwen Stefani, the longtime music superstar and current coach on NBC’s The Voice where, of course, Blake Shelton, has been a coach since day one and the presumed couple has just recently become a confirmed couple. This story has moved at the pace that even social media struggles to keep up with.

But yet now in the aftermath of that divorce announcement, shocking to the world at the time, Gwen Stefani gives her first major interview on the topic to InStyle. In the weeks and months leading up to that announcement, for all outward appearances, the couple and their three children — sons Kingston, 9, Zuma, 7, and Apollo, 20 months — seemed a portrait of modern-day celebrity domestic bliss, and were hardly a topic of speculation.

Gwen Stefani gave some insight on that looming trifold question of what happened and when and why as opened up about the frenetic life she was living. She said, “I didn’t tour at all. But I did record the No Doubt album, which was super hard. I was torn the whole time.”

She went on to detail the life of balancing being the mother of three young children, and a music artist, saying, “Every day I would take the kids to school, drive to Santa Monica, work on the album, and then I’d think, ‘Oh my God, if I don’t leave by 2:30, I’m not going to get home in time for dinner.’ And Gavin being on tour… I’m not going to say there weren’t some incredible moments making that album. But it was a lot of knocking my head against the wall. A lot of struggle.”

She also opened up about the adjustment she had to make in becoming a mother, saying, “In the beginning, I didn’t want to think of myself as a mother. I was like, ‘Wait a minute! Ain’t no hollaback girl is who I am!’ I had to learn quickly to accept it.”

She added, ” Being a mother and having a career — those are just different roles you play. You’re still the same person you were before, but now you’re more because you’re a mother too, with a lot to do.”

Her youngest child with former husband Gavin Rossdale, as noted is Apollo, still a baby, being now a few months shy of his second birthday. She spoke about how his presence in their lives became pivotal, saying, “I was in a closed-off period before that. I couldn’t write, and I didn’t feel confident. There were hard times before the baby, personally, that were just not good.”

She went on to say, “And then having Apollo, and being on the show [NBC’s ‘The Voice’], and being refreshed — it was just like, ‘Whoa!'”

She went on to say, “I’m in a really positive place now.”

And of course, in the days after the interview went to press, the world has learned more about what for many weeks was still rumor, that she is dating Blake Shelton.

There’s quite a bit more to the interview and you can see it here and the stunning Gwen Stefani InStyle cover below along with the behind-the-scenes video of the photo shoot.
