Selena Gomez opened up about her former boyfriend Justin Bieber, being body shamed, being single again and more in an interview with Refinery 29. She also posed for some sultry and sophisticated photos for famed fashion photographer Olivia Malone.
Yes, Selena Gomez shows us in pictures and words that she is very much all of 23 years old, as she obliterates her Disney child star image once and for all, and emerges unscathed, all considered. We’ve seen other Disney stars on the other side of 20 and some have fared well, and some not.
In a wide-ranging interview with Refinery 29, as part of the massive publicity for her critically acclaimed ‘Revival’ album, the emerging pop music superstar reflects upon the year past. Among the topics, naturally, her former boyfriend, Justin Bieber and their romance which dominated headlines right from the outset, and tabloid coverage began to take its typical gutter trajectory.
She said of him, “At this point, there is no anger. There’s closure in a very good, healthy way…We’ve seen each other. I’m always encouraging and I am proud of his journey. I think people are making it out to be something that is more tragic than it really was. We grew up together. We both made mistakes. That’s it.”
She went on to add, “Of course I got my heart broken. Of course I was p—ed about it.”
She also revealed that she is adamant about being single, saying, point blank, “Do not try to date me right now. I’d rather be around women than men. I think they are interesting, complicated, and beautiful.”
She went on to speak of four women in particular, her BFF Taylor Swift, of course, but also her two roommates, who are not celebrities, and her cousin. She said of them, “I have a lot of friends in the business, but at the end of the day, [these four women] are who I call crying. They see my best and my worst.”
She also opened up about the body shaming she was subjected to when an unflattering paparazzi photo of her in a bikini went viral. At the time, she had responded with an Instagram bikini pic with hashtag #moretolove.
She said of the incident, “It was appalling. I had never experienced that before. I was sad. I was angry. I feel all of it.” She went on to say, “I don’t want to become little or hurt or a victim. I want to be strong for girls. I just want them to know that there is an option of standing up for yourself.”
She also spoke about how social media has affected her, saying, “I’m young and susceptible. I’ll be looking at someone’s pictures and start feeling bad about myself. I’ll have to turn it off for a few days.”
She added, “It’s also scary how it can turn into your life. It can be the first thing you check in the morning and the last thing you’re doing at the end of the day. Crazy.”
But the photos this time, which you can see below, reveal polish and sophistication and, no doubt, they too will go viral. See the full interview with Refinery 29 here.
