American Idol alum Lauren Alaina talks about her new song that she wrote for ESPN, ‘History,’ and opens up about her new single, ‘Next Boyfriend’ from her forthcoming album. Years after rising as the season 10 ‘Idol’ runner up, she reflects upon success and talks future plans.
The 20-year-old has not faded into the distant history of ‘American Idol’ as have so many. After nearly 15 years of the show we have just a handful of stars, and Lauren Alaina shows she is edging into that territory. While Scotty McCreery, the winner that year has gone on to become a bona fide country music star, she too is forging ahead and has a new album in the works, the long-awaited follow-up to her 2011 debut ‘Wildflower.
And now, a new honor, writing a song, ‘History,’ which will be used in the promotions for ESPN’s college football season this fall. Only she and the rock band ‘Imagine Dragons’ are contributing songs this year.
She told Billboard of her excitement, saying, “I am freaking out.” She went on to say, “I love college football so much. It’s like a holiday at my house. There’s nothing else going on around the house. I’m pumped to have the song being used to promote the season. It’s going to be played for about 14 weeks, so I’m very excited about it.”
She also drew parallels between the college football players and their ambitions to her own musical career, and said, “I really love the heart that these athletes have. They are going out there and trying to make a name for themselves. It’s the first step toward their career, which with me being a new artist, I identify with that.”
And she did also express enthusiasm and passion for the sport, and noted that that though she’s from Georgia, like her Alabama native father, she’s a fervent Alabama Crimson Tide fan.
She went on to say, “It’s a different career path, but we both are trying to stand out and be the best that we can be. I love that.”
Alaina also spoke about her new music, saying, “My new single is called ‘Next Boyfriend,’ so hopefully, with all the hot guys that play football, I can find my next boyfriend. I also love the tight pants.”
Well, whether she finds a new romance, of course remains to be seen, but the song ‘History’ — which you can hear below — is going to become quite familiar over these next several months to college football fans, and we know what such song placement can do for an artist’s career. We’ve seen it many, many times over the years, perhaps most recently with Rachel Platten’s ‘Fight Song’ which has gone on to become an international hit, and was more than helped along by its appearance in ‘Pretty Little Liars.’ Well, we can multiply that effect many times over!
