Justin Bieber revealed why he cried during his MTV VMAs performance, announced his album release date, performed his new sing,e ‘What Do You Mean?’ and sang ‘Where Are U Now’ as a country music ballad. And that’s just the half of it! It was quite the Bieber takeover of The Tonight Show!
Yes, the 21-year-old former teen pop music idol took over the iconic NBC late-night talk show and the viewer could certainly think it was instead the Justin Bieber hour. Yes, he was the sole guest. Soon after his emotional performance of his comeback single, ‘What Do You Mean?’ at the MTV VMAs he was back on television.
Now, on the Tonight Show, it was essentially a Justin Bieber takeover with not just an interview, but a performance, a spoof performance, a freestying segment with The Roots and the audience, and, a drum-off with The Roots’ leader Questlove. Oh, yeah. Quite a night. Not surprising it’s going viral and is being talked about and will be talked about for quite some time.
In his interview with host Jimmy Fallon, he opened up about that performance of ‘What Do You Mean?’ which saw him break down in tears at the end, prompting much speculation as to why he cried, if the crying was real, or a cynical ploy and so on.
Justin Bieber said, “It was just so overwhelming for me, everything. Just the performance — I missed some cues so I was a little disappointed at that — and just everyone and their support.”
He went on to say, “Honestly, I just wasn’t expecting them to support me in the way that they did. The last time I was at an awards show I was booed.”
That was the 2013 Billboard Music Awards when he took to the stage as a presenter to a chorus of boos which, of course, inevitably led to a viral video.
He did also address his past behavior which led to not just the booing of that night, but, as we know, the long, drawn out saga of legal entanglements, an arrest, massive tabloid coverage, social media backlash and so on.
Reflecting, he said of his recent past, “I just had a bunch of knuckleheads around me.” He went on to add, “I went through a place of trying to figure it out. You have to test the waters.” He also noted, “I just happened to be in the spotlight and in front of cameras all the time, and they caught all those moments.”
He went on to talk about the new album, and surprisingly, in the moment, forget the release date, which he was there to announce. It was actually, technically, Jimmy Fallon letting the world know the album is due out on November 13th.
Yes, this is the first new album since ‘Believe’ which was released in 2012 which, in retrospect seems like a long time ago. Way back in 2012, there was talk of dire Mayan prophesies and, much like the year Y2K, we thought civilization as we knew it was all coming to an end.
So yes, it was a long time ago, but the long wait for a new album — and a changed man, we hope — is coming to an end for the loyal Beliebers.
Not yet titled, the new album follows the lead single, ‘What Do You mean?’ which Justin Bieber performed that night, and which, upon its August 28th release immediately went viral, topped nearly 100 iTunes charts around the world and set a Spotify record.
And yes, amazingly, he also delivered a country ballad style performance of the EDM club hit, ‘Where Are Ü Now,’ his collaboration with Jack Ü, the famed EDM duo DJ Diplo and DJ Skrillex, which has been so popular worldwide.
