Keira Knightley graces the cover of ELLE magazine’s 30th anniversary issue. The actress and new mother reveals the name of her baby daughter and opens up about turning 30 and more in a lively interview. She’s luminous on what may become for the magazine an iconic cover.
The now iconic magazine chose a 30-year-old star for its 30th anniversary issue which is also the traditional giant September issue. A double honor for an actress. And there she is, in a sultry low-cut black shirt with the headline “This is 30!” emblazoned. It’s quite alluring and makes the point, as you can see below.
But Keira Knightley does have some secrets to reveal, not least, the name of her three-month-old baby girl. And, what a way to make a baby announcement, we would have to agree! And this name …. drum roll, naturally …. Edie!
In the interview, Knightley told ELLE magazine how pregnancy enabled her to find new appreciation for her body. She noted that “as a woman, you hate certain parts of your body” and continued, saying, “You go through those periods where you look in the mirror and you think, Oh, if only I had different legs or arms or whatever.”
But as she revealed, becoming a mother was transformational. She said, “You go through pregnancy and labor and then feeding the kid and you go, Wow, my body is totally amazing, and I’m never going to not like it again, because it did this, and this is f–king extraordinary.”
As for that milestone birthday that she and the magazine, share, she Knightley spoke dismissively of the decade of life she’d just left behind, saying, “My twenties were pretty crap. My career was absolutely amazing; in fact, I don’t think my career will ever get better than it was in my late teens, early twenties.”
She went on to speak of her personal life, drawing a contrast, saying, that “you’re changing so much and you’re trying to figure stuff out.” She went on to say she was not someone who went “wild” and “threw caution to the wind” but instead was “very shy.” She said, “It took me a lot of years to try and stop pleasing a lot of people and allow myself to have fun.” She elaborated, saying, “It’s the difficult thing of getting out of your own head. To stop going, ‘Oh, there’s something I should be doing, there’s a way I should be behaving, I should be dressing….’ All of those shoulds, you can drown in them.”
While actresses sail through their 30s these days with less challenge than in previous years, she does open up about that milestone birthday. She quips, “I was heavily pregnant, I couldn’t drink—what is the point of having a thirtieth birthday if I couldn’t get phenomenally drunk?” And then tells the story of the marvelous dinner party she had, sober and all.
And with or without phenomenal drunkenness, it’s a milestone still both for the actress and for the magazine which, let’s face it, in this day and age, is perhaps fighting for survival in the digital age. But at least a 30something actress these days is getting more respect, and as the alluring photo shoot should prove, in case needs be proven, 30 is hot and just getting started.
