Demi Lovato opens up about her musical and personal evolution, and her intentions behind her racy new ‘Cool for the Summer’ smash hit, as she transitions and moves forward as an recording artist, and leaves her Disney ‘Barney and Friends’ child star days far behind.
The 22-year-old is quite upfront in interviews during her tour of Australia about shedding both her Disney child star image. After all, it was not all that long ago that after her debut as a mere child on ‘Barney and Friends’ alongside the iconic purple dinosaur, she went to become a co-star in the popular Disney ‘Camp Rock’ movie that was all the rage a few years ago, and then there was ‘Sonny with a Chance.’
And, just when it seemed that Demi Lovato might become another Disney star casualty, she bounced back after her2010 stint in rehab and, for years now has been a proponent for mental health issues and self-empowerment having successfully undergone rehab for a variety of issues, of which she’s been candid about in the past, from drug and alcohol addiction to bulimia to self-harm and more.
But yet, that too can be constricting, just as much as being a Disney star. Hence the shock over her new ‘Cool for the Summer’ music video. Had that been Miley Cyrus or Madonna, we would have just collectively thought, ho-hum, more racy stuff to rack up VEVO views.
And, in a new interview, with news.com.au in Australia, Demi Lovato opens up about her why and how she’s firmly intentional in the new and sultry path and its F-bombs and scanty costumes.
Quite bluntly, Demi Lovato says “I curse a lot!” She goe on to say, “The fact I had never cursed in my music was a small example of how I was trying to please parents (of young fans) and be a different woman for them.”
She continues, saying, “But if I am feeling like swearing, or wearing certain outfits, I shouldn’t be tied to what they want or expect.”
She also speaks about her recent ‘Cosmopolitan’ cover which, true to form for the iconic women’s magazine, reveals her in a sparkly silver one-piece cleavage revealing outfit. She said, “I am showing a lot of skin now but the most important thing is showing somebody struggling over body image that it is possible to go from self-harming and throwing up to finding confidence and being happy with yourself.”

Demi Lovato also delivered a standout performance of the smash hit, ‘Cool for the Summer’ on The Voice Australia, with an all-female band, and wore one of her new characteristic revealing outfits on stage, as you can see, in the pic below which she posted on Instagram after the performance.
