Amber Heard opens up about her bisexuality and what it has been like for her in the past several years to come out as one of few in Hollywood who openly acknowledge their sexual orientation. She also stressed that she does not want it to “define” her.
The 29-year-old actress recently married 50-year-old Johnny Depp was officially confirmed. In recent months she has given a smattering of interviews in which she has opened up about her personal life. Now as Magic Mike XXL hits theaters, she’s on the promo trail and dropping a few comments here and there that have gone viral.
Especially in this climate of rapid change and acceptance of LGBT into the mainstream, her bisexuality is a topic of curiosity to some. She’s been out as a bisexual for many years, since a 2010 GLAAD event. She formerly had a girlfriend, the noted photographer and artist Tasya van Ree.
The Independent interviewed Amber Heard right after the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court 5-4 decision that recognized the constitutional right of same-sex couples to marry in all 50 states in the U.S. She reflected upon her own coming out. She said, “At that time I didn’t know of anyone else in my position who was a working female lead actress.”
She went on to say, “I don’t want to have to deny my sexuality in order to be me. But I don’t want to have to be defined by it.”
Continuing, she added, “I’m fundamentally opposed to trying to edit myself to be palatable or popular. I don’t give a f**k. I fight, but I shouldn’t have to.”
She also spoke about the movie ‘Magic Mike XXL’ in which she stars as Zoe, the love interest of Channing Tatum’s character. She revealed that she had some input into the shaping of that character by rewriting some of the lines to give some implication that the character is bisexual.
She told The Independent, “It’s a film about men seeking sexual attention.” She went on to say, “It gives the power position to women. My character’s function has nothing to do with her sexuality.”
Also costarring in the long-awaited sequel ‘Magic Mike XXL’ co-stars Matt Bomer and Joe Manganiello.
