E L James author of the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ trilogy spoke about ‘Grey,’ the new book in the series, in a TV interview which you can see right here. The new book is told from the point of view of the Christian Grey character. She also answered a few fans’ questions.
The publication day of ‘Grey,’ was June 18th, which is the birthday of its fictitious principal character Christian Grey, the billionaire business tycoon and S&M aficionado brought to the big screen by Irish actor Jamie Dornan opposite Dakota Johnson’s Anastasia Steele.
Fans had been eager for this latest book to say the least. In the weeks leading up to the official publication date news broke that the book had been stolen, and there were alternately reports that this was an actual fact and that this was a publicity stunt. Turns out the book was not stolen.
Amidst all the fanfare the 52-year-old British author E L James made an appearance on the Today Show where she spoke with NBC News’ Erica Hill about the new book. She was asked all the essential questions, such as, is this one “naughtier” than the other three. To that, James replied, “I don’t know.” She went on to say, “It was interesting to write from a man’s point of view. You’ll have to be the judges of that.”
And indeed, fans already have been. One doesn’t have to go any further than social media if one wants to know what the fans have to say! All one has to do is follow the hashtag #grey on Twitter and one will find spoilers galore including a few choice screenshots from the book pages.
Yes, there’s been much talk about ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ especially after the movie. What began as fan fiction based on ‘The Twilight Saga’ has turned into an international publishing phenomena. This book became a bestseller even before its official publication at midnight, with pre-orders on Amazon and other outlets racking up into the millions. Yes, millions.
So while the next movie is quite a ways off, the new ‘Grey’ is just a few mouse clicks away for buyers who have something to tide themselves over with until the next book arrives and the next movie arrives.
We don’t know with certainty when another book is out, but what we do know is that Sam Taylor-Johnson is not returning to direct the sequel. She voiced her displeasure in several interviews over what amounts to creative differences. Similarly the original screenwriter has voiced similar displeasure. Of course this just adds to the intrigue as it means news outlets have something to write about and the studio is getting free publicity.
That’s the sound of the churning of the ‘Fifty Shades’ publicity machine. ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ was a trilogy but now with its immense commercial success as a franchise it could be that there’s no end in sight, at least not so long as it’s generating profits.
