The 31-year-old Katharine McPhee rose to fame on American Idol as the season 5 runner up. She cemented her fame with the NBC musical drama ‘Smash’ which saw her portray the a rising Broadway star. She found herself in the midst of scandal when photos of her with married director Michael Morris surfaced. The extramarital affair was at the expense of her marriage to Nick Cokas to say nothing of a great deal of unwanted publicity.

Now she is back, this time as a recording artist. She’s announced a new album, Hysteria, due out on July 24th. It’s the first since 2010’s ‘Unbroken.’ She spoke with Billboard about the new chapter in her life is not with reflection upon her recent past. She said, “There’s so many things and events that have happened in my life in the last 3 or 4 years.”

She went on to draw a parallel between her previous albums and her current music, as she said, “I found it difficult to find inspiration of things I wanted to sing about. I think I was also shy; I wasn’t sure of myself as a writer. I really didn’t feel like I had that much to say, had that much to write about.”

She continued and explained the “overall theme” of her upcoming album, saying, “there’s been searching, there’s been heartbreak, there’s been longing, I think finally, for the first time, I felt motivated to find stories within my own life to write about.”

She also spoke of the album’s lead single, ‘Lick My Lips,’ calling it “probably my most summer-y, carefree song that I have on the album.”

Katharine McPhee also spoke about the much-anticipated one-night-only Broadway performance of ‘Bombshell,’ the Marilyn Monroe musical that was the focus of the fictitious theater world of ‘Smash.’ As such it functions as a reunion of the show’s cast. She said, “I just want people to go crazy and really relish the music for the night because it’s going to be so fun for all of us.”
