Katy Perry opens up about her split from former husband Russell Brand, her thoughts on future relationships, having children, and more. Throughout the interview, the pop music superstar speaks of her resilience, resolve and fearlessness.
In an interview with Australia’s Daily Telegraph, Katy Perry was asked about her former husband, British comedian and author Russell Brand. The couple split a few years ago, and Perry has notably written several songs about him, including ‘By the Grace of God.’
When asked if she had spoken to Russell Brand lately, she told the publication, “He hasn’t spoken to me since he texted me saying he was filing for divorce.”
She went on to add, “I don’t want to talk about him — my songs will say what I need to say.”
She was also asked whether she thought that Brand being a recovering alcoholic even as she herself was a social drinker had anything to do with the dissolution of the relationship. Perry said, “No, not really. I love to go out, celebrate, have a cocktail or two or three but only when it’s appropriate. If I’m on tour I have a responsibility to my fans to behave. People are always looking for answers to pin those things down. But my attitude is: “Only forward, never back.”
Later in the interview, she was asked about the couple’s cat, whom they’d named Rusty as an amalgam of their names. She said, “I still have the cat. But I’ve changed her name to Monkey.”
As for future relationships and whether she was ruling them out, she said, “No, absolutely not. I’m excited by whatever it brings. I’m excited by my own evolution, I don’t want to end up bittersweet.” She continued, saying, “I have to evolve, I have to continue to push people’s perceptions of me. As an artist I like to do that, keep people on the edge of their seats.”
She was asked about that resilience and she said, “I’m one of those people that likes to be fearless. We bungee-jumped in New Zealand on one tour. We go to water-parks and do things like that because I have a little fearless invincibility streak in me.”
She went on to elaborate and she said, “I don’t like to live in fear because that traps you and your voices. Fear is a control tactic in the world that is negative and depressing and I don’t want to be associated with it.”
And indeed, from outward appearances she is living those words. Despite the heartbreak and the divorce, the pop music superstar has had tremendous success in the past few years, not least her critically acclaimed Super Bowl XLIX performance. Prior to that, she was on her Prismatic Tour in support of her Prism album which produced several international hits including the anthemic ‘Roar’ as well as the ever-catchy ‘Dark Horse.’
As for becoming a mother, she told the newspaper, “I’m still growing up, I’m still learning about myself…When I become a mother I just want to become a mother and be dedicated to that.”
