Jason Derulo graces the cover of Billboard magazine and talks about his split from Jordin Sparks and the resultant fallout and negative publicity. The R&B superstar also spoke of his new album, and his many musical collaborators in a wide-ranging interview with the iconic publication.
It’s just the sign of the times. It’s an honor to cover Billboard magazine when one is on the verge of releasing an album, and with such honors, of course, the hopes of topping the Billboard 200 album chart. His new album, ‘ Everything Is 4,’ is on the way with an A-list of musical guests including Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Meghan Trainor.
But it should come as not surprise that what’s driving headlines, including right here, are his comments on his breakup last year with longtime girlfriend Jordin Sparks, R&B star and American Idol winner. He said to Billboard, “I do get tired of playing nice.” He went on to add, “Especially when people think I did something wrong, or that she broke up with me. But it’s so behind me.”
The publication offered some context for the statement, noting for instance, that Sparks had told a radio station he leased the BMW he gave her a gift and that he had put a photo of the receipt on Instagram, and later deleted it.
He and Sparks had been music royalty for a time, and when they broke up, it was not just one of those, statements released on Facebook or to the likes of People magazine, and life goes on.
No, it was one of those celebrity splits that drew much attention, speculation and fueled many a rumor and tabloid headline. At the time, he himself had called in to On Air with Ryan Seacrest and told the eponymous radio show host to try to set the record straight. At the time, he said, “It’s not a bad situation. There’s no bad blood. We didn’t end off on a weird way or a negative way.”
But that was that, just the two sentences to Billboard that time around, and when asked about his dating life now, he said it would take “a miracle” to get him into another relationship.
And this, at last, was the segue into a discussion of his music and his singular devotion. How much devotion? The publication notes that he and his musical collaborators wrote more than 100 tracks for his new album during his 2014 tour. Yes, that’s a lot of devotion. Derulo said of it, You can’t pull me out of the studio.” He added, “Songwriting is a muscle…The more you do it, the better you get at it.”
But the devotion is nothing new, and stems back to childhood. He said of his early years that he was “always focused” and went on to say, “I didn’t spend a lot of time doing things that I didn’t think would make me great. I studied all kinds of dance, all types of music. I got good grades. I started hitting the recording studio around 13.”
And his fans have certainly benefited, as he’s come up with some international hits over the years including the ubiquitous ‘Talk Dirty’ and ‘Wiggle.’
You can see more of the interview in which he talks about his intense devotion to fitness. Not to mention the shirtless Jason Derulo Billboard cover that’s drawing some notice here. Behind-the-scenes photo shoot video is below!
