Mindy Kaling graces the cover of InStyle magazine and opens up about her relationship with B.J. Novak, shares her thoughts on marriage and more. The former ‘The Mindy Project’ creator and star also posed for an enticing photo shoot.
The 35-year-old actress has recently seen the Fox network cancel ‘The Mindy Project,’ romantic comedy she created that made her a star which sees her portray the fictionalized character Dr. Mindy Lahiri. However the interview with InStyle was conducted prior to the cancellation. But, as is sometimes the case when a popular show gets the axe, its star receives much attention.
In the InStyle interview, conducted in the recent past, she did speak of the show, and said, “I love seeing #themindyproject trending! I can just say that I don’t think it’s over for these characters.”
This has been more than enough to fuel rumors that the program may return in some other format, liberated, as such from network television. Reportedly producers are in talks with Hulu although there has been no official announcement.
Mindy Kaling also opened up on a variety of other topics including her relationship with fellow actor, B.J. Novak whom she first met on the set of The Office’ when both were guest stars. She said of him, “I will freely admit: My relationship with B.J. Novak is weird as hell.” She went on to detail the “weirdness” and said, “He is not my boyfriend, but he is not my best friend. I guess you could describe our relationship as a ‘romantically charged camaraderie with loud arguments,’ but I don’t think Facebook would accept this as a new status.”
Yes, it does seem to be a relationship that defies social media pigeonholing as such and there are far too many characters needed to describe it to fit it in a Twitter profile or an Instagram profile for that matter. But, nonetheless, news outlets and fans alike persist in calling N.J. Novak her boyfriend, or her significant other or some such romantic appellation.
She weighed in on the topic of marriage, in general and told the magazine, ““I don’t have a particular urge to get married, but I do know with certainty that I want to have kids, because my relationship with [my mom] was so special.”
And sadly, it is a past-tense relationship she had with her mother. She said of her death, “I’ll be honest. I don’t think the way that I’ve dealt with my mother’s passing has been ideal. I was very lucky that the show started up at that time so I could just throw myself into it and distract myself.”
She went on to speak of how much the death has impacted her over the years, saying, “But the truth is, even though it’s been three years, it still feels like it just happened. I remember the sound of her voice so distinctly. One inadvertent thing I’ve learned from her passing is that anything bad could happen to me professionally, but it would not be worse than one sad weekend.”
She elaborated, saying, “The experience of losing my mom was just so much worse than anything that could happen to me workwise. I could lose all my money, and I would be like, It’s fine.”
