Mariah Carey kicked off her Las Vegas residency with a concert that’s generating a buzz on social media. See photos, video highlights, set-list along with a roundup of reviews from music critics. Was the show at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace a triumph or not? Fans and critics alike are weighing in.
It was with much fanfare that Mariah Carey announced the Las Vegas residency, entitled, “Mariah #1 to Infinity” with a new single, ‘Infinity’ along with an album which shares the title of her residency. It’s a compilation of her 18 No. 1 hit singles — an achievement few artists can match — and, even with an event that saw her arriving in a pink Cadillac at Caesars Palace and wearing an attention-getting sheer dress.
But beyond fanfare, when an artist of her stature and reputation and four-octave vocal range takes to the stage people have high expectations, or, alternately, anticipation of a train wreck.
From the reaction on social media, along with reviews of critics — with one notable exception — it’s quite apparent that Mariah Carey has proved naysayers wrong and delivered a stellar performance. She’s also drawn notice for her numerous sequined gowns, both long and short, all of which had something in common; plunging necklines revealing her ample cleavage.
After the show, she Tweeted with enthusiasm: “Cheers!! Opening night!! Thank you everyone!!! #1toInfinity”
Mariah Carey’s Las Vegas set-list chronicles her No 1 hits in chronological sequence:
“Vision of Love”
“Love Takes Time”
“I Don’t Wanna Cry”
“I’ll Be There
“One Sweet Day”
“Always Be My Baby”
“Thank God I Found You”
“We Belong Together”
“Don’t Forget About Us”
“Touch My Body”
As for the critics, here’s a roundup of what they are saying.
“….“One of Carey’s characteristically piercing high notes was about to be unleashed. For each, and there were many, the pop icon received cheers and applause from the crowd gathered for the singer’s opening night of ‘Mariah #1 to Infinity,’ her Las Vegas Strip residency…Carey’s voice wasn’t always up for hitting the highest notes, opting for a deeper sound at times that wasn’t there when she came to fame in the 1990s…High notes or note, the fans in the crowd were almost always on their feet…..” — Yahoo
“….“The singer, 45, kicked off her Las Vegas residency Wednesday night at Caesars Palace by poking a little fun at her reputation – and then proving beyond any doubt that she can still bring the house down with her huge range and high notes.”…..” — People
“….“You watch the crash because you want to see how it will end: near miss or carnage, relief or horror, laughter or tears. Part of the appeal is the feeling of helplessness – you are a viewer, but not an agent. Whatever happens, you’ll be affected, but you can’t chart the course. And looking away is never the right choice.”…..” New York Times
