Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour kicked off in Tokyo and has become a sensation on social media. See video highlights, photos, the full set-list and a roundup of recaps and reviews from music critics of the inaugural night of the pop music superstar’s latest tour.
With much fanfare, perhaps even exceeding high expectations, the tour has begun! Taylor Swift’s first 1989 concert in Tokyo at the Tokyo Dome was clearly a hit with fans and critics alike. The concert, as is the norm these days, was not just for the fortunate 55,000 who attended in person, but has become an international event as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and all the other popular social media have given us our gathering place to share in the moment.
It is her first-ever pop music tour, and supports her new album, 1989 which arrived last fall with much ado over the transition from country pop to pure pop. Taylor Swift has much to celebrate as her musical transformation has been a rousing success and it’s clear that if anything she has gained many more fans. She is certainly reigning on social media with more than 70 million fans on Facebook and more than 57 million followers on Twitter, just to name a couple of stats.
Taylor Swift arrived in Tokyo and as TMZ reported, at the airport, the sheer numbers of her fans and the sheer heights of their enthusiasm caused the delay of at least two flights.
It was all in buildup to what was from all appearances on social media and major media alike a crowd pleaser of a concert.
In fact, Taylor Swift herself took to Twitter to express gratitude and excitement, saying, “I was so happy tonight. See you next time, Tokyo. Next up, we bring the whole ’89 show to Rockin Rio in Vegas….. ”

“….Swift opened with “Welcome to New York,” using a mock NYC backdrop and featuring her retinue of all-male dancers. For the third track, Swift launched into “Blank Space” and extended the number by using a vocal loop of her singing to repeat the word “Tokyo” and harmonize with herself. […] The elated audience was only outdone by Swift, who looked genuinely thrilled at the superb show she just pulled off……” — Billboard
“…She began with the first song on 1989. Before her set was done, Swift performed every song on the standard edition of 1989, plus bonus tracks New Romantics and You Are in Love. …..” USA Today
