The first Fifty Shades Darker trailer has debuted with Jamie Dornan reprising his role as Christian Grey in a solo scene. It’s the sequel to ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and it is our first glimpse of the much-anticipated adaptation of the second novel of the bestselling EL James trilogy.
The sequel won’t be released in theaters for nearly two years, so talk about the long tease, this is surely it. And to top all of that off, ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ is missing a director now that Sam Taylor-Johnson has left the franchise. But that said, both of the stars are back; Dakota Johnson’s Anastasia Steele will once again be the willing prey of Jamie Dornan’s Christian Grey. And this time around, it’s the author EL James’ husband, Niall Leonard who will write the screenplay.
As the trailer begins, we see the title card — “Are you ready….” — and a cut to Jamie Dornan’s Christian Grey as he stands before a mirror and puts on a black suit jacket over his white shirt and bow tie. The next title cards continue the inquisitive and enticing line of thought “… for something… darker?”
Next we see Christian Grey putting on a black mask, as if to get ready for a masquerade ball. As he gazes at himself, there’s almost a whiff of The Dark Knight, but that would be quite a different franchise and quite a different universe.
Granted, it’s not much to go on, but then too, there’s two years’ worth of build up to attend to! Can’t let the viewer know too much too fast. It’s not the kind of trailer that leads to cross-referencing in the EL James novel, to take to social media and discuss the pros and cons of screen version versus novel version. Yes, we’ll be getting to all of that much later down the line, too.
And, too, with the absence of a director of ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ one can only conclude that this must be a scene rescued from the cutting room floor of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ or did they, per chance, shoot the trailer, and just the trailer for the sequel.
Well, so many unanswered questions now that the biggest question of all was answered that yes, there will be sequels.
Fifty Shades Darker opens in theaters in February 2017. If that sees like a long wait, the first Fifty Shades Darker trailer video below should ease some of the pain!
