Kim Kardashian talked about stepfather Bruce Jenner’s transition in an exclusive interview on the Today Show and opened up about how she and family members are making what she calls a “hard adjustment” to his becoming a transgender woman.
The 33-year-old is the first Kardasian or Jenner family member to give a television interview after Bruce Jenner’s interview with Diane Sawyer in which he confirmed that he is a transgender woman and spoke of his journey of transition. In the Friday night broadcast seen by nearly 17 million, Olympic great and reality TV star revealed that he had been confused about his gender identity since childhood and who declared in the interview, “For all intents and purposes I am a woman.”
Today Show co-anchor Matt Lauer interviewed the KUWTK star, and NBC has given some previews of the full interview, which will be broadcast on Monday. In one such teaser clip, he asked the KUWTK star what the adjustment has been like for the family and she said, ““I think there is still an adjustment, and there’s family therapy, and we’re really close.”
She went on to denounce some of the excessive media coverage and said, “I see reports that say this one doesn’t support him, and this one’s over here, and my mom feels this way, and it’s all really so made up. We all really support him.” She added, “Is it a hard adjustment? Yes.”
She said of Bruce Jenner’s journey, “I’m really happy for him that he is living his life the way he wants to live it. And that he has found inner peace and just pure happiness. That’s what life is about.”
She continued, saying, “I don’t know what life would be like if you always felt like you weren’t yourself. As long as he is happy, and he wants to live his life, however he wants to live it, that just makes me happy. And I support him 100 percent.”
Kim Kardashian joined numerous family members who offered encouraging, uplifting and affirming statements on social media during and after the broadcast. Among them, his three ex-wives — including Kris Jenner who said, “Not only was I able to call him my husband for 25 years and father of my children, I am now able to call him my hero.” Also, several of his six children from these marriages spoke out as well, including his Brandon Jenner who appeared on camera in the television special and who Tweeted,”“Proud son.”
For her part, Kim Kardashian Tweeted a photo of herself and Bruce Jenner with the caption, “Love is the courage to live the truest, best version of yourself. Bruce is love. I love you Bruce. #ProudDaughter.”
