Kanye West performed live at the TIME 100 Gala, and the video (below) has gone viral. He left the crowd spell-bound with a full set including the James Brown classic, “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” as well as some of his own signature hits including “Good Life.”
Not surprisingly Kanye West made the TIME 100 Most Influential list, and not only that, he was honored further as he was featured on one of the five covers of the special issue, along with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Misty Copeland, Jorge Ramos, and Bradley Cooper who respectively graced the other covers.
But for this influential person — who was categorized along with Apple CEO Tim Cook among others as a “titan” — there was yet another honor, performing live at the gala.
He began the set with the often covered James Brown iconic hit ‘“It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” but he put his own original spin on it as he performed with numerous shirtless male backup dancers on a stage that was illuminated in orange. As the video below reveals, it gave quite an avant-garde performance-art effect and served to remind us that Kanye West also has strong roots as a visual artist.
From there he launched in to his latest single, “All Day.” This was followed by some of his signature hits, including “Blood on the Leaves” from the “Yeezus” album, as well as some of his earlier classics including “Runaway,” “Good Life,” “Gold Digger” and “Touch the Sky.” He also performed “Only One” which is about his and wife’s Kim Kardasian’s daughter North West, (and which he collaborated with Paul McCartney on the recording).
In total, the set was 20-minutes long, and has been captured for the rest of us as attendees have been uploading videos to YouTube. As you will see below, once again, Kanye West delivered. He’s been on a roll with memorable performances of late including a surprise appearance at Coachella.
