Charlize Theron graces the cover of W magazine shares her thoughts on aging and women. The ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ star also talks about motherhood and poses for an alluring photo shoot clad in black leather, black bodysuits and the like.
The 39-year-old actress weighed in on a variety of topics in W Magazine, including these notable hot button issues that always make headlines any time a celebrity voices an opinion.
For Charlize Theron, this has been the case. She opened up about coming to grips with aging, and told W Magazine, “I think, like many women, I was judgmental toward women as they aged.” She went on to say, “Women, in our society, are compartmentalized so that we start to feel like we’re cut flowers and after a while we will wilt. I realize now that’s not the case — we can celebrate every age.”
She added, “That’s my encouragement to 20 year olds who are terrified of getting older: Don’t have a nervous breakdown and don’t hit the Chardonnay too hard. Getting older is not that bad.”
W Magazines that she laughed as said, “Actually, I’m a complete alcoholic, but, please, don’t worry.” Despite the indication of laughter she may face backlash for that comment as is often the case.
But let’s hope that doesn’t overshadow the larger point about women and aging in our society and the enormous pressure and anxiety it can induce.
Reflecting back on her own life, and what she might tell her younger self, she said, “I would say, ‘Calm down.’ I was always in a rush. I felt like time was going to run out.”
She added, “Now that I’m older, I know I’m not missing out on anything. Now, I go home, and that feels really good. When I hit 30, I realized I didn’t have to please everybody. I could actually enjoy life, which is not a bad thing at all.”
Charlize Theron also spoke about how becoming a mother in her 30s has changed her. She is the single mother of a three-year-old son, Jackson. After speaking about her dogs, and how dutifully she has taken care of them, she said, “The loss of some of my dogs has been just as devastating as the loss of a family member. Having said that, I do know that choosing to be a mom in my late 30s has been really great for me. It’s given me perspective.”
She also spoke about her decision to shave her head for her portrayal of Imperator Furiosa in the George Miller-directed ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,” the long-awaited sequel in the franchise that dates back to the 1970s when Mel Gibson had the title role; Tom Hardy has taken over that role in the new movie.
She said, “At first, my character was going to be ghostlike and albino. And then I thought it would be stronger to shave my head.” She revealed that when she call the director to tell him, “He went silent, which I thought was a good sign. So I borrowed some clippers and buzzed it all off.”
When asked about what it’s like showering when bald, she said, “Well, yes, it was really fun to shower with my bald head. You have not showered until you’ve showered hairless. That’s all I have to say.”
The wait will soon be over to see the actress in her bald glory as the long-awaited sequel — 30 years after the last movie in the series! — hits the big screen in May.
